O.K., so I am a complete rookie, and. to avoid making a rookie mistake, I thought I would ask the experts:
I have an idea for a little stunt that involves a prediction, and it just seemed to me that it would look really cool if the prediction burst into flame and vanished, hence, of course, the idea that the prediction would be printed on flash paper (which I haven't used before). So the question is, is it feasible to create a document and print it on flash paper, or will running it through the printer essentially risk blowing up my printer and burning down my house? The best answer I have gotten thus far is Ï only know I wouldn't try it on a laser printer" (thanks Magic Inc. in Chicago). |

I know that most sheets of flash paper used in actual performance are small - maybe 3x5 or 4x6. Using an entire 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper is a pretty big burn, and unless you have that all planned out ahead of time you will cause a huge fireball. Also, depending on how "wet" your paper is, printer ink may not stick well. Laser printers are definitely out: they use a heated end unit (fuser) and can get hot enough to ignite the paper.
I've never tried drawing or writing on flash paper, although I'm sure it has and can be done safely. If you insist on using flash paper, that's the route I would suggest. Ed |

Hi Pierre! Welcome to the Café!
This of course depends on WHERE you plan to perform. Fire effects can get you into a LOT of trouble, due to fire regulations today. A magician friend of mine years ago, had a fire wallet, and thought it would be funny to do that at the bank. After hearing about the trouble he got into, I completely eliminated all fire/flash paper from my performances. Your mileage may vary, but I would strongly suggest thinking about it seriously and do some due diligance before doing anything fire-related. Doug |

My experience has been that it is easier to write on flash paper than print on it.
Have you considered using a rubber stamp? It may be cheaper than destroying a computer printer. |

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'm going to do this little stunt WITHOUT flash paper for now. Everyone has agreed that running the flashpaper through a printer is mighty risky, and, anyway, if I use an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of flashpaper I will most likely lose my eyebrows. The best solution was the rubber stamp idea, and the guys at Magic Inc. here mentioned it as well, but I think that's more paraphenalia than I am willing to invest in at just this moment.

It probably won't go thru a printer, it's too delicate. It also has residue on it and may harm your print heads. Why not use a Sharpie. It is the only writing instrument that will write on the paper without tearing it and it is visible enough. Roll the paper into a ball and experiment with it outside first to see how it will behave. Once you are used to it, use it in a safe venue where nothing flammable is near by. The stuff can be dangerous, so really get to know how to use it.
