Those of you who typically wear a jacket, sport coat, suit jacket, etc. and you do it in warm weather like Jimmy in Louisiana or Devious in San Diego how do you deal with it being so *** hot?
I have started wearing a jacket everyday but it is fall. In the summer in Georgia wearing a jacket is going to kill me. I plan to get a summer suit coat or sport coat but I guess there will still be a lot of acclimating to do? I am really interested in how you can deal with the heat. Do you take the jacket off in between shows? |

I'm not a jacket man myself (unless it's the tux) but I do wear vests. Always.
And yeah, I wear it even when it's brutally hot down here, along with the long pants unless I can't stand it. It's a pride thing. Plus, I sweat off all my excess weight... "Step right up, Ladies and Gentlemen! See the amazing human sauna!" Seriously, I would say hydration is the key. Drink lots of water, not only the day you perform, but the day before. My vest doesn't come off until after the show, but again that's my character. I don't break it until I'm off site. If the hat is on... I'm on... Maybe some jacket guys can chime in.

I use Bobby Mavericks Busker's vest, year round. It is designed by Bobby who is a busker and knows what we need

I ALWAYS wear a jacket and it NEVER comes off.
I wear a very tight fitting undergarment which absorbs sweat, so my apparel doesn't become saturated. The bayfront brings in a cool breeze as most of my pitch spots in San Diego are along the coast. Jimmy, I know for a fact doesn't remove his coat or vest ever during performance either. My look includes a black umbrella, which of course keeps my in the shade during the day. I hand it out to someone in my groups during performance so it also serves as an anchor. We just suck it up as part of the deal. I personally super hydrate myself before and during the day. IF you are working a constant show one after the other, it's much more challenging, but find some time to take a break. Don't be greedy leave some money for the others.... Quote:

I took a red hoodie, cut the sleves off, cut a big V about halfway down the thing, and sewed the one big pocket into two, I didn't do any hemming so it still looks like it was cut, but I think it looks alright, I think it kind of makes me look like a street performer. it's pretty open too so I don't think it could get really hot, and the pockets are the way I like em. so I just wear my normal jeans and t-shirt, throw that on, add a hat, and I'm good.

Just making sure everyone else was as crazy as I am, that's all. Sounds like we are all on the same path so I am content!

Yes I did say Bobby knows what we need. He has been doing this full time for a few years and knows the busking business. Bobby has a unique bio. I'll just hit a few things and let Bobby tell the whole story.
Bobby was an executive chef for a very large chain of hotels and fine dining restaurants with a very large salary. He has always loved magic and went down to see Kozmo when he was in town. Well Koz saw a lot of talent in Bobby and urged him to start busking full time. He walked into work, gave his notice and started working the streets. Needless to say with his reputation as a chef he could have very easily gone to work for a fine dining place but he is obviously making a good living as a busker. he knows our business, he knows what works, he has designed things to make our life easier. I support him. |

I live and busk (part-time) in the greater Washington DC area. I wear a jacket in the fall and early spring, when it's chilly out doors. I wear a vest when it starts to warm up, and work in short sleeves when it gets blazing hot and humid at the height of the summer. There are no cool breezes in DC in July-August.

The reason I am asking is part of my top secret plans for my shows future. I have started working with a topit, Michael Ammar Model, as well as a Vernet Model Gravity Hold out. Those of you familiar with these utility devices will understand that each needs to become part of you or they can't be utilized well. I have started wearing the jacket as it has cooled off here and plan to get a summer style jacket for next year. I have been bitten by the beauty of the magic that can be created by using these two items.
I have ideas flowing and plans for new and amazing stuff. I spent 4 hours last night sewing my topit by hand and then sewing it into the jacket. My current jacket has a blue liner and it was tough to match. Previously I tried the topit just pinned in but I have to say that it is much easier to work actually sewn in. I am not sure why. I will be getting the Fitch Topit Workshop dvd's as my next magic purchase. I am extremely excited about the changes to my show for next year. Billiard balls are going to be a great addition to my show as well as the things I am thinking about for my utility devices. |

The style I'm going for in my character is between a wise guy and a 30's circus worker look. So I like to look just a little edgy... but always have that cheesy smile for attention and kids. I was working this summer in weather around 100 degrees... and started getting "woosey". The next day of the festival (I was juggling; doing some magic; but making money with balloon animals) I wore a vest and got a bandana and a BIG jug of water. I would soak the bandana throughout the day and wrap it around my neck. It REALLY helped me. There are also special cloths (not sure the name) that motorcycle riders and athletes wear in the summer that do the same thing; but keep the water longer. I was working with out shade in the middle of a field. But that kept me alive that weekend.

Danny had some advice about that afew years back. Black scrub pants, white kitchen workers top, and the cheap unconstructed jackets made for costume rentals.
I never figured out what the tops were, but the rest of it works.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

I was busking in Sinapore this year 80% humidity!
The sweat flows of you as if your in a shower you are soaked through before you know it! The sweat was dripping of the end of the arms of my jacket. Their is a few ways to fight sweat. don't fight it embrace it. Drink Warter bottles of it. don't waer any thing wool, including your hat. (it will never dry out) |

In summer, hot weather, I wear a light tan loose weave cotton, unconstructed jacket with shortened (2/3 length sleeves, with a light but contrasting colored T shirt.
The jacket fits my character more than a vest. The Doctor

The reason I am asking for advice is due to two utility items that I plan to start working into my routines. The problem is that each item requires the routine to be structured to facilitate it's use. That means that attire changes could make the routine unworkable. I like the idea of unconstructed jackets. Also I have linen or seer sucker is good for summer.
