A great article. It had me go look at the Steinmyer book.

I hope I can do this without breaking any rule about secrets in the searchable forums. I'll try to word it carefully.
I'm just now, after nearly 30 years, getting back into magic. I decided to start with an effect I used to do regularly, wherein two cards were shown, then you fold one vertically and one horizontally and put them together. when you slide the vertically folded one through the horizontally folded one the former inverts, showing first its face and then its back. I remembered its "main" secret, but not the details about how one put the two cards together in order to make the effect work. so I decided to search the web to see if there was an explanation out there. there were tons of them. and all of them that I watched just sucked. oh sure... I found out what I was looking for. but literally all of the ones I looked at had none of the subtleties whatsoever. in fact, they mostly were so filled with "short cuts" that pretty much anyone with a few active brain cells would be able to figure out the secret if someone were to perform the effect exactly as shown in the videos. so, even assuming that a vast majority of the populace at large watched these videos--and their view counts belies that assumption--I'm pretty positive that I'll be able to perform it for your average layperson and knock their little cotton socks off. (my sweetie, who's never seen me do any magic, got a nice little googley-eyed look when I tried it out on her.) in fine, I'm not losing any sleep over the "revealers" at this time. they can have their 15 minutes and I'll still be able to entertain an audience (the most important part of this whole endeavor) and maybe even mystify them a bit. it's not that I think it's cool to reveal the secrets, it's just that I don't think it'll make any difference to those of us who want to entertain folk with magic. |
