How good is this trick and do you feel that it can actually fool people? I think that close observers won't be fooled at all so I don't perform it. What do you guys think?

Watch Max Howard perform this and it will change your perception.

Why is that so? Did he change the handling, or is it his patter?

Flying Eagles is a good, solid and reliable approach to the "coins across" plot, and it and "Winged Silver" seem to be the progenitors of all the "acrosses" that have followed.
You do need to think about the routine, however, since many things go unexplained in Bobo's text. Why is the second row of three coins there, for instance? The routine was a successful part of one of Brian Gillis' appearances on "the Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, and it played well. The large number of coins involved is an asset to those of us who work with dollar-sized coins. There are subtle changes to the number of coins used, the handling, and yes, the presentation, that make this a valuable routine for today's coin magicians. I lectured on this at the LVMI/COINvention. If you're interested, the notes "COINS: Howtowhentowhattowhyto" will be available from Kainoa's website soon. As a teaser, there's also a great follow-up sequence of Kainoa's in the notes, and my angle on an effective presentation. It's good, reliable stuff, and neither knucklebuster nor does it demand "Palms of Steel". You do need to be able to classic palm in your left hand, however, at least in my handling.

Aw, man! I thought everything was going to be in edge grip now so I didn't have to classic palm anymore...

Hi LoneWolf,
I, too, perform Flying Eageles on a regular basis. It is a great piece of Magic theater. Get Curtis' notes. He is a solid thinker and performer. Additionally, you can see my performance on my In the Trenches DVD. Regards, Paul Green |

I thought it uses a thumb palm..at least that's what I was told in Easy to Master money miracles where Ammar showed this trick.

My favorite coin routine is Magic Western Union, my presentation for Flying Eagles. I do it all the time and it has never failed to get extremely strong reactions. It's on my DVD and in my book, "Great Scott! It's Coin Magic!" Larry Jennings told me it was the best presentation he'd ever seen for the effect--to this day, probably my proudest moment in magic.

Scott,
I thought your proudest moment was when I said "I can't use a Sanada Gimmick with 3 sponge balls" and you said ... "Yes you can" and I said .. "No I can't" and you said... "Yes you can". I thought that was it?

Here's news: I Loved Scott's Western Union! It is actually a good plot (and funny too). Use it.

Hi Frank, Yea I think 3-3 is the max on it! And on my handling you get to show the hand it is jumping to clean each time before a coin jumps over!

Thanks, Ugdini13!
My version is a variation of the classic handling directly from Bobo. Sometimes the classics are just fine! Regards, Paul Green |
