Last week my PC stop being able to log on at all. After a full day Norton quarantined but did not remove Zeroaccess!inf4. allowing me internet access but warning that I am not secure. They said that I needed to manualy remove this Trojan since you couldn't. They also recominded that I buy removal tools from another sources at $29.95 . Goolge searches revealed that before using the recominded patch I wouldneed to do a few things myself not mentoned in the advertisments, usually begining with "open the core".
Most comments also stated that it didn't work. I assumed that this was a new threat and a patch would come from Norton or HP in a couple of houre, then I noticed that nemourous comments were months old. I receave almost hourly measages from Norton that to remove threats I must restart my computer. Several times it has restarted despite my selecting restart later. Twice in the last two days, in the middle of paid streaming movies.

You are paying for some protection. But full protection (which doesn't really exist) requires doing a few other things. Here are three:
1. Create a separate user account which doesn't have administrator rights, and do all your surfing with that account. My account name is Sparky. You can use a different name, if you wish. 2. Don't use Internet Explorer. Being the most popular browser on the planet, it's the least safe. I myself use Firefox; but it has become so popular that I'm thinking of changing. 3. Avoid all porn sites like the plague. As fun as porn might be, it's dangerous for your computer. I'm not sure it's particularly good for your moral health, either. You cannot rely on an antivirus program to completely protect you. You need to also be careful. |

I have heard from multiple sources that Norton is bad, and it wastes more memory and money than it saves. A couple of moths ago, our computer also crashed. It would not allow us to even get to the logon screen. Apparently, a virus deleted the command prompt from our PC, meaning that it literally couldn't do anything. Unfortunately our CD Drive was also broken, so we couldn't run the start-up disk to download the CMD prompt.
All that, and we had Norton as our security provider. Still, we sent the PC to my uncle who gave us a new CD drive, downloaded the command prompt, got rid of the virus, deleted Norton and installed a new, better security checker that is free. So, yeah, we were upgraded. I occassionally upload some things onto MediaFire so I can save them for later. Norton used to say that the file was potentially dangerous to download again and would not let me download it. This was very frustrating: it came from MY computer, I want my file! |

I'm not a Windows owner, so I was wondering: does the new Windows 8 ameliorate these problems?

Does your isp provide a free anti-virus license. Mine gives me 5 licenses to McAfee. Promotes network health, I suppose.

Really? I've never tried it out. And now I've got a good reason not to.

Google Chrome is fast, simple and reliable. I like it a lot. Of course, the goons at Google probably know everything I've clicked in the past 3 months.

My system crashed under the protection of Norton. I wish you all the best because you will need it.

I use Google Chrome and a little free add on called Ad Block which stops ads loading into pages - even Facebook.

We had a Dell for ten years and it worked when it wanted to. We had Norton also.
Over the years we had a couple of IT people work on our compuer. They both said Norton wasn't the way to go for good computer protection. Our computer woes forced us to look for a new all-in-one computer. We went to Best buy and purchased a Toshiba model with an intel core i7. We also had Best Buy have the Geek Squad clean out all the material new models place inside their compuers and install Kaspersky Anti-Virus. So far so good. We haven't had any computer issues. We also don't allow our kids to play computers games on our computer. Our kids have Wii. They also each have their own 3D DS. We feel that's plenty of computer time for them. Kaspersky Anti-Virus has worked well for us thus far. |

Getting back to the OP, I use the free version of AVAST and have had no issues.

Suggest you do the following three free things to protect your computer; free.avg.com Virus protection (Very Good), Malwarebytes.org malware protection (also very good), piriform.com install their free CCleaner, use it daily, (is very quick and efficient).
Use Firefox as a browser. If you do these three things you are not paying for something that does not work. John
