Hey guys this has happened to me twice with in the last 2 months and I've been caught off guard both times. I have been trying to step up my balloon twisting and have been using a lot of Ken Stillman's creations and Buster's designs. I've gotten a lot faster and I'm now doing them in restaurant work and especially at birthday parties. My question is with the increased complexity of balloons, I'm getting the smart alec teen that is with mom and little sister or brother and is too old to get one. When the mom urges the teen to "go ahead and get one", the teen asks "what's the hardest thing you can make?" And then wants it. Today when I was asked I jokingly said the eifel tower and the kid immediately wanted it. I laughed and said it takes 32 balloons and is 12 feet tall, he would have trouble carrying it out. He glared at me and said He'll get help and he wanted it. I said ok, it's $3.00 a balloon and I take visa or mastercard, how did he want to pay for it. He sneered and walked off! I'm sure I was not confrontational with him and it seemed he just had a chip on his shoulder, but this is the second time it's happened. Has anyone else experienced this and what type of comeback did yoy use?
Thanks, DAT

Yea, I've had something like that happen a couple of times.
I deal with it like this... I just tell the guy (it has always been a guy) I make a life size snow white. He says he wants it. I say "go get your own girlfriend! I'm just joking." (I don't know why that is so funny but it always gets a big laugh) I wish I could but she takes a couple of specialty balloons that I don't typically carry with me (all true). I'd be happy to make one for him at his next-insert appropriate event here. Would you like one of my cards? Usually he or someone else will ask about the snow white. I show them a picture of her (ken stillman princess) on my iPhone. Everybody oohs and aaahs. Then I pass out at least a couple of cards. If not to the bugger, then to one of the other folks within earshot who have heard the whole exchange. Surprisingly, I've booked a few gigs from this little interchange. |

I get this all the time. I have always used the direct approch. I raise an eyebrow and ask them why in the world would I tell them that? that's my secret but you are more then welcome to ask for anything you like.
Everyone watching laughs at the idea that I am a step ahead and that in the end the kid still gets whatever they wanted. |

What's the hardest thing you make?
Answer: A Rock Have you ever stepped on a rock? It's hard! Always seems to work.

However...
I normally don't give them a choice. I tell them that "I'll make them a surprise. That I know what they need more than they know what they want and that if I choose, you're guaranteed to receive a piece of awesome!"

The second most common question I get of that nature is “What is your favorite twist?” I always say “My next one.”

I always use these reply lines :- A Yeti, A Lepricorn, A Loch Ness, Etc, Etc
Sometimes they will ask why its hard, and ill say well ive never seen one, so I don't know where to start, ill then ask them have they seen one???, and theyll say no, so ill then say, so even you don't know how to do it, or make it then???, Well ill definately never be able to make it then without your help If they don't ask, I will just say that anyway, and then just give them A Long Blown Up Balloon And they will always ask what is it, and ill always say its an Alien They will always say no its not, and I say how do you know its not an Alien, have you ever seen one??? Kinda funny, but in the end ill make anything, and say do you know what it is??, NO Its a wotever I decided to say at the time ( A Yeti, A Lepricorn, A Loch Ness, Etc, Etc ) going to a Fancy Dress Party Not sure whos line that is though??, but always work good for me, and its just a case of saying it for any hard balloon, even if its the fancy dress part, as they soon cotten on they will get whatever you feel like giving |

I ususally do line work and some restaurants. when asked that question, I usually say 'the hardest one to do is the one you never tried. like anything in life, once you try it, it gets easier' or 'wow, that would take a really long time and I have a lot of other kids that don't have any balloons yet. here is my card and have your mom/dad give me a call and I can make it for you.

"Can you make Justin Bieber? How about a full size house made of balloons right now?!?"
I can make ANYTHING out of balloons but I need two things. 1. Enough balloons 2. Enough time If I don't have both of these sometimes I can be limited but I can make anything when I have both of these. I tell everyone and I mean everyone this. Honestly I avoid like the plague doing line twisting and HATE working festivals. When doing huge lines like that it really stresses me out and I hate hate making the quick line simple stuff with a never ending crowd standing around like the DMV line and no matter how hard you try there is always some person keeping your there longer for free since you feel bad you missed a few. To much stress, low quality balloon art, feeling like a stressed out balloon machine with no value.. NOT ME I enjoy 15-25 kids at a party, dining establishment, wedding or event where I can make whatever they want and have everyone shocked at the work of art that was just made. I avoid clients that call and say: "How much do you charge to make balloons swords and doggies?" They flat out are seeing ALL balloons artists as the same except for one single thing. The PRICE and that is without a doubt NOT ME. |

Thank goodness for Balloon Magic Magazine! Someone asked for a freaking snowflake today, really??? Then the brother asked for a cube, that one sounded a LOT harder than it was. Kind of makes me miss swords though, LOL.

Justin Beiber? That's a big one people ask for. Here is the one I make now when they ask for this. I learned it from Brian Getz.
Just make this hat and then everyone loves it afterwards since it's Justin Beaver....
