Jay Marshall and Jack Chanin were considered the experts of sleeving in their day. Jay Marshall has a booklet on sleeving and you can find Jack Chanin applications in his book Chanin, the man with the magic hands.
Sleeving is not used so much today mainily because of the design of clothing with more fitted clothing. In the early years mens clothing was a little looser in design. If you watch old movies from the 1930's,1940's and 1950's in black and white, you will see the difference. http://www.magicinc.net/sleeving.aspx There is also a chapter on sleeving in Modern Coin Magic book. |

In Rocco's sleeving dvds, does he explain ball and card sleeving?

There is nothing on ball or card sleeving specifically, as these items are not natural for the purpose.
For a ball the technique would be similar, though the mass would limit it's use. Cards do not have enough weight to work effectively. Rocco mainly covers lit cigarettes. Again, you are showing you do not understand the words you are using. Sleeving is used to seemingly vanish and retrieve objects. |

Anverdi had some outstanding ideas about sl**v*ng balls. When he performed vanishes, productions, and color changes--it looked like pure magic. I had the pleasure of seeing him lecture twice, and the manipulation part of the lecture intrigued me much more than the liquid tricks and such. (That ring glass of his, though, was one very striking and mystifying piece of visual magic.)
Anverdi's lecture notes were sketchy at best. The illustrations were fantastic, but the text was limited mainly to labeling the drawings. But if you can "read between the drawings" you can get some great material. I haven't seen the hardcover _50 Years of Magical Creations_ book to form an opinion. But I think the best of the sl**v*ng material was probably in the lecture notes, especially the first set with the yellowish cover. I wonder if there is any video of Anverdi... ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Rocco covers sleeving cards in his lecture, I do believe it is covered in his lecture dvd.

If it fits ...by Rocco.
One does not have to have large sleeves. Things can be done in sweatshirts, sweaters and sometimes button down shirts. Harris still with palms of aluminum foil, for a lighter touch in coin magic

I use sleeving in my magic act (i sleeve candy, fantasion candle, cigarette, loolipop and much more) and I think that sleeving of balls and cards is very difficult, as Bill Hegbli said: Cards do not have enough weight. Problem with balls is shape, they don't properly fit in a sleeve (maybe only small balls). For balls and cards I use technique from Jeff McBride's dvd.
I can recommend to you the sleeving dvd from Rocco and Johan Stahl. |

You could use a holdout device to help sleeving hard to sleeve objects. Topits are great for ball vanishes.

Rabinak, what Jeff McBride's dvd are you referring?

RJH, I don't know, how advanced are you?
But in general I can recommend you this. Jeff MrBride's World class manipulation is very complex set of dvd and dvd set of Art of card manipulation. Maybe "Manipulation without tears". |

I'm at art of card manipulation level on card manipulation.. But in World class manipulation, is there sleeving?

I guess Magicians may possible be right....Rocco does cover 'sleeving'. And, I'm following McBride's guidance too....Some astonishing effects in both cases, and more...!

I can also recommend John's Stahl DVD, he shows some cool stuff on it. But for beginning, I would definitely choose Rocco's dvds.

Avoid Johan Stahl's dvd 'Sleeveless Sleeve'... even tho, the blurb claims Carl Coutier says, "His work is remarkable'. I have the dvd and the only remarkable thing is that Stahl sends stuff up his sleeve ! Of course, Where else.?
Sleeveless Sleeving? Really? NO, NO, NO. Stahl does send a pen up his sleeve - with no threads and no pulleys, no wires, no rubber bands, nor string. The force required to move an object from his hand to his elbow is, you guessed it, made by a human...the magician. Stahl uses a hand to move a thin object (eg.pen/pencil)from his hand to his elbow...very, very fast...Humanly fast..the speed you and I can manage after practice. Contrary to the advertising blurb on the dvd, and by some retailers, Stahl does not have techniques. He has ONE only...ONE ONLY technique... and when you know it you may well wish for your money back...Have a good/quick think about Stahl's claims and the actuality of a human being alone moving an object - sleeves or no sleeves. The stuff about 'sleeveless' is pure advertising mis-direction. In Stahl's dvd he works with a shirt on and with a jacket on...both have sleeves and in the dvd a sleeve is definitely and clearly used to vanish and produce a small thin item. Buy it and blush!
