Not really, but this is a genuine photo of the Martian surface taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2009.

So let's play amateur scientist. How could NASA conclude that these aren't trees? What else could they be?

Without seeing the data collected from the site, conjecture is going to be difficult. Not directly related, but a nice parallel. My mind jumped to this:

I was going guess a liquid magnet or ferrofluid stuff.

Josh: The picture IS data. Can we make some inferences from it? Nice link, though. I laughed a lot.

spartacus: We can all google. But that's far less interesting than having a discussion.

tommy: Interesting idea. Care to expand on it?

True. However this particular picture was discussed extensively in 2009. Unfortunately, "interesting discussions" in this part of Magic Café usually end up with name calling, blaming everything on the Obama administration, the ignorace of liberals, anal retention of conservatives, not another Bush in the WH, blame everything on the illegals, eventually at some point mentioning Hitler, and finally the thread gets deleted.

I think the "trees", however, are pretty cool...

Well my understanding is we know that iron oxide makes Mars appear red. The picture looks like it was hot lather. So I was thinking the heat of the lather melted some iron oxide turning it liquid. The “trees” in the picture look similar to, or rather reminds me of ferrofluid formations. ie

Perhaps caused by electrical storm.

None of which is science based but just a wild guess. Smile

It's a cool guess. The pink looks like frost on the red surface (which, I believe, the scientists think too).

Here's a big clue. The "trees" cast no shadows.
