Hey Fellas,
I'm looking for sources of mental(esque) magic with cards, where the mental aspect happens in a very subtle way. Card Tricks where the spectators just barely get to the end of the effect before you do, and that fact is what makes the trick unbelievably strong. To give an example to hopefully make this more clear, two tricks where something like this happens is, Blackstone's Card and Number (Greater Magic or Card Magic by Hilliard, pg. 489 I think) and James Browns Reverse Engineering. In Blackstone's Card and Number, the spectators name a number and you dead cut that number. The spectators then get to count the cards. However this is done in such a way in where the spectators want to cut the cards, and you and they know it, and then you allow them. They in turn sort of create the ultimate ending in their mind without them knowing it. The counting of the cards, is secondary to the location in a way (so they think), but actually blows the effect up. You can see Lorayne performing his version on Youtube (search: Numero Uno). Its a powerful effect. In Reverse Engineering, which is essentially a card location blended with a predicted card to pocket type effect. The main effect is the card discovery/location (so it seems), however it's blended with that second effect, which is the real effect but they do not see it until the very last moment. It is in this moment, they realize what is happening and again create the massive effect on their own, and you just watch it happen. Am I making any sense? I guess, its effects that have a psychological opponent, but that psychological piece happens in a way that isn't really recognizable until the last minute. Hoping you guys can provide some additional resources! |

A few effects that come to mind are Paul Vigil's Sympathy for the devil and Pluckley by Benjamin Earl from his Past Midnight dvd set. They both have a twist in them. Also check out Paul Harris. He has some really good effects like Backlash 2 and Pack of Lies from his True Astonishments dvd.
There's also another topic that has some good recommendations: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=2 |

Thanks andyk!
I'm definitely going to look into those! Ben Earl's stuff is exactly what I am looking for. Things in the same vein that is. Much appreciated! |
