LAS VEGAS For millions of travelers and road warriors, the ubiquitous hotel key card is the primary, and essentially the only, way to access their rooms at the end of day. However, security researcher Cody Brocious believes the current systems used to secure hotel doors throughout the United States and elsewhere are severely flawed.
Speaking at the Black Hat security conference here, Brocious demonstrated how locks from Onity”a company that sells security products to hotels and other businesses”can easily be bypassed with a $50 hack. http://news.yahoo.com/hotel-room-locks-p......ies.html
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

We have sold, or brokered owner direct purchases, for tons of these on hotels, hospitals, assisted living facilities, dormitories etc, and even several military installations. There are millions of them out there. It's a very expensive system. They have a couple of fixes for the glitch but with so many out there it will be a long time before they are all secured, and a lot of them will probably never be fixed. Especially since the best fix is a new circuit board and Onity is not giving them away for free. If a facility wants to replace it they have to purchase it and install it themselves or hire someone to do it. Broadcasting it on the nightly news probably isn't going to help matter much.
It may be even bigger than shown here. They have only been "Onity" for about 10 years, they operated for a long time as Tesa Entry Systems and I don't think the locks have changed much, they just re-branded them as Onity. I'm not sure if they are including the Tesa lock in their estimates of how many doors have that lock on them. |
