I am considering sending my Granddaughter to the Chavez School of Magic. I have read all I can find about the school. All I've read has been positive but seems to come from information from several years past. I have the applications and information from the school including the curriculum and fees. I cant find any first person accounts or reviews from former classroom students. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

She will only develop good techniques to carry her through her life. Dale Salwak in California would be the School to attend. |

Bill,
Thanks for the links. I wish the search engine on this site would work with " all forums". I find myself "Googling" for TheMagicCafe info. The links you sent didn't Google. These links were very informative, especially your opinions on the course of study. I would also like to hear from someone who has attended the course of study in person with Dale Salwak to give my Granddaughter and I a feel of how the school operates. Perhaps a description of a typical day, week or month in class. Mr. Salwak has been very forthcoming with answers to my questions but it would be interesting and informative to hear a firsthand account of life at school on location. |

We have a lot of Chavez Graduates on the Café. You will find that not many make it known for some reason.
From what I have been told by the late Neil Foster who use to teach the class in Colon, Michigan, the student attends one day a week, the rest of the time the student is to be practicing and learning the new information, in cards, balls, coins, cigarettes, thimbles, and the final lessons touch on Dove productions. You learn the basics, and when you are done, you will have a complete routine in each of the areas I mentioned. All non-class time the student will be expected to be working on their material for that week, and the previous weeks lessons. All areas are learned at once, a little at time for each lesson. It is a 22 week course, with the final weeks the students are encouraged to develop their own material. It does not have to be the course material, but at the end of the period, the student should have a complete act totally formed and working in all aspects of stage magic and presentation. I don't know about now, but when I took the course the props were not available, so I had to obtain the props myself, and make the gimmicks used in the course. Marian Chavez gave me templates to make the gimmicks from. Besides the course cost, you have to have living arrangements during this time as well. So it will be a sizable investment, just like attending any college away from home. There have been some students that completed the course and immediately went to Las Vegas to perform. This is not the standard, but that is how complete a course it is. The student will have a basic act, that will be very professional. Of course with the advancements in manipulation magic over the recent years by the younger generation, there is whole new area of magic in Wands, CDs, parasols, oriental hand fans, jumbo multiplying spheres and jumbo coins. With what a student learns in the Chavez course, they will more readily pick up and know how they wish to present these other times if they choose to further their interest. As far as, getting a current student, Mr. Salwak should have some references or referrals to give you from other students. |

Bill,
Once again, thanks for your reply. The printed information from Mr. Salwak is in agreement with your assessments with the exception that he does make alternate arrangements for out of state or country students by holding class three days a week for two to three hours per day. The student is required to practice for two hours minimum for every hour of lessons. The out of state students usually complete the course in two to three months. Yes you are correct in the expense category. Thankfully Mr. Salwak has arrangements with some ladies that take in his students and supply room and board at a very reasonable fee. |

I live close enough to the school that lodging would not be an issue. Anybody here have the short answer on the cost for the course?
