The Secretary of the Interior has ordered the closure of California's lar......sh farm, which annually produces 450,000 pounds of shucked oysters, and provides a livelihood to 30 employees. He is returning Drake's Estero to "wilderness."

That's a shed load of shell fish to shuck per person in a year!
Surely changing an environment quickly will also cause problems? |

Their lease was up. The owner of the land had a better use for it so they decided not to renew. The current owner of the business was made aware when he bought it in 2004 that there was no guarantee that the lease would be renewed. He was also informed as early as 2008 that there was a good chance this was going to happen. He should have had a contingency plan. He took a risk on keeping that cheap National Park rent and lost That's the risk involved with doing business.
The estuary already brings in 2 million visitors a year and generate 85 million in revenues and supports over a thousand jobs. So the loss of this business will have little effect on the local community. I'm sure the 30 workers can all get jobs at the nearest Walmart and the reduction in the production of clams will be made up for by clam farms in the orient. Which benefits everyone as they will undoubtedly be cheaper. Thus making them a benefit to the consumer by saving them money which will benefit the economy even more. So really I don't understand your issue with this. Ever body wins. The workers get better jobs at Walmart and the consumers get cheaper clams.

Thanks Payne. It's amazing how a just a bit of background information completely debunks the impression given in the original post.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I don't know what experienced shellfish workers get, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a lot more than the $7.50 they'll get when they enter Wally-world! Me? In two more years I'll be making what I was making at Art-mold before Norwood Promotions bought it and lied to everyone about how their jobs were secure before liquidating the company and sending all the work and equipment to Illinois!

If every business in the area except Wal-Mart finds them unemployable and Wal-Mart doesn't, maybe their biggest surprise will be finding a job opportunity where they hear "When can you start?"

The original post made no mention of the fact that this was a time-limited lease and that the owner was well aware of the fact that it would likely not be renewed. Payne said "clams" instead of "oysters." You seize on this one minor error and attempt to use it to debunk the much larger point that was being made. That is a classic deflective technique and illustrates yet another of the logical fallacies often used to avoid answering relevant questions. Please provide citations to reliable sources that indicated this was NOT a limited lease situation. THAT would be a relevant response. |

No Bob. It was meant to be tounge in cheek. I guess you're better at spotting humor from Payne than with me.
Although, Payne's explanation is even more one sided than the original story linked to. |

The business has gone to China as the new world order is their oyster.
