I am very interested in the Oil and Water trick, as well as the Dr. Daily's Last trick. Anyone know if these are taught in the Card College series? If not, could you suggested some sources where I can learn these? I prefer reading books, so some books would be great.

There are various versions of oil and water. Both gaffed and ungaffed versions exist.
Ultimate Oil and Water by Anthony Owens (DVD + cards) is a good gaffed version: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 and http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=175&1 Oil and Water Deluxe by Ben Harris (PDF download) is an ungaffed version that has had some good reviews here on the café: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=218 I don't remember seeing an oil and water in card college. |

Dr. Daily's Last trick can be found in THE DAI VERNON BOOK OF MAGIC Written by Lewis Ganson on pages 210-214
If you are just starting out in card magic do yourself a huge favor and get either THE ROYAL ROAD TO CARD MAGIC or the CARD COLLEGE series first. Then move to Vernon, Daily, Marlow etc... You will learn better that way. Plus it will be a very enjoyable start to your journey in card magic. |

Bicycle Rider, (nice name, by the way) if you are a beginner, as some here are assuming, then I would start with the Mark Wilson Course in Magic if you don't already have it because 1) it is a great beginner's book that will introduce you to all branches of magic, and 2) it has a version of Dr. Daily's Last Trick in it. If you already have this book, it is called Color Changing Aces No. 2 and it is a good version of the trick. I used it for years until I changed the handling to suit me better.
For Oil and Water, anything by Aldo Colombini is good (he has many, many versions of this trick) and will be within reach of a beginner, technique-wise. |

L&L Publishing has an Oil & Water DVD as part of their World's Greatest Magic series.

There are so many variants of this effect floating around that you can easily drive yourself to bankruptcy while acquiring printed material containing O&W handlings.
Here are a couple of additional suggestions. First, Scott Guinn has a 43 page eBook on O&W with several routines based on the work of guys like Aldo Colombini and Ray Kosby (the contrast here should strike the card guys as funny). You can get it here: http://www.lybrary.com/great-scotts-oil-......s_id=235 There's plenty here to keep you busy. Good thinking all around. Also, Juan Tamariz's "The Magic Way" is being reprinted early in 2013 which is a book about to create more impactful magic and to demonstrate his points he focuses on O&W and includes many different handlings as well. I'm going to be picking this up as soon as it's released.

Thanks for all your kind inputs, I would look into those resources. Although I am new to the forum, I have study magic for a little while, but have took a long break. Now the break is over, I would like to start this hobby again. I do have the first two series of Card College, as well as John Bannon's Dear Mr Fantasy, Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic and Harry Lorayne's Close Up Card Magic. I remember seeing Oil and Water in Mark Wilson's book also, I should take a look at it again.
I enjoy reading Card College the most though, I really love that there are so many details and reference in the each move/trick... if only Roberto Giobbi includes more classic effects in the books.

I wish there were a written source that was the equivalent of Aldo's or L&L's O&W DVDs. Unfortunately, I don't think one exists. The Guinn ebook looks good, but I think the L&L O&W DVD is the place to start despite your preference for a book. There are a lot of great routines from Malone, Regal, Jennings, Ortiz, Ammar etc.

Nick Trost is another superb source for O&W routines. H&R Magic is doing an eight volume set of Nick Trost's magic titled Nick Trost's Subtle Card Magic. The first three volumes are complete and can be bought directly from H&R or any quality brick and mortar or online shop. Volume 4 apparently is at the printer's. Anyhow, I was paging through volume three the other night and found a few O&W beauties.
Aldo has mentioned quite a bit in this thread. He LOVES the O&W effect and has tons of variations. My favorite of the ones I have studied from Aldo is called Nice Salad. I learned it in his book What's Up Deck. That book I think is OOP but I am certain this routine is also availble from Aldo. Best part of it all is that every product on his site is priced at only 10.00 USD a pop! The Tamariz routine is really a masterpiece and well worth the studty as others have mentioned. Here it comes folks: I wish Apocalypse was still in print as there are quite a few O&W routines scattered throughout. One that is particularly powerful is a sort of O&W routine by Walt Maddison called The Sting. You can find this particula effect also on Mr. Lorayne's Best Ever DVD set. I am like you Bicycle Rider in that I prefer books. But, Lorayne's DVD set is uniformly excellent. Get on L&L Publishing's mailing list and watch for their sdales. This set comes up for sale a few times a year. The Complete Walton is being reprinted and you might want to invest in those books simply because they are great books. But the reason I mention them is that you will find Walton's classic effect Oil and Queens. As Steven Keyl has stated, you could go bankrupt seeking out O&W routines. There seems to be two schools of thought regarding the effect with one side stating that the effect is really "magician's magic." Others like Aldo Colombini feel that it is great non-magician magic. Have fun in your search! Namaste, Vlad |

My favorite oil and water is the KJV oil and water from Up in Smoke by Larry Jennings. I think it's also on his Thoughts on Cards DVD. Not the easiest but a definite fooler, and it really looks like you don't do anything, it appears moveless.
