Hi - Can somebody give a review of John's new book please?

I got this book as soon as it was released. A few years ago at a F.F.F.F. convention, John fooled me badly with a few effects from this book. John didn’t ‘tip’ anything to me at that time as he said he was writing a book on this material. So needless to say I have been anxiously waiting on this stuff for a long time!
Here’s a very short mini-review: Memorized Deck: If you like memorized deck stuff then there are definitely a few items in the book that will interest you. The first item in the book is one that I was personally fooled by. It is basically a totally hands off impossible divination of a selected card. I like it a lot! Deck Switch: If you are into deck switches then there are two here that are very cool. In one version you never even touch the deck. Impossible Locations: This is the section that I was really excited about as John had fooled me with many of these. John has several impossible location type effects that truly seem impossible. I often see posts here on the Café entitled “Tricks I can use to fool magicians”. If you are looking for unique tricks to fool your magic buds at the next club meeting or convention, then look no further. The best part is that most do not require memorized deck and are basically self- working…I like that! Performance Pieces: “Right On The Money” is a total fooler. There is a one-time set up that will take you some time…but once it is done you will have a very unique prediction effect that can be done strolling, close-up, or stand up. I will use this. Any Card At Any Number: Those of you who like to Jazz with a memorized deck will probably love this. It is not an ACAAN routine that works 100% of the time…however you have 3 very good chances to make this a real miracle for your audience. On the occassions that you don't get the 'hit' you still have an incredibly strong trick. I will definitely be playing with this idea. Other: One other item that I really like was John’s use for the glued deck principal. Back in the day when I was doing restaurant magic, this would have come in VERY handy and been a VERY magical / funny solution for a common problem that strolling magicians are often confronted with. There are many other items that I did not mention in the book…these are just the ones that I went looking for upon my first reading. Conclusion: If anything I said above interests you then you will probably like the book as much as I do! Hope this helps, Cody S. Fisher

Hi Cody, thanks for your review!
Being a memorized deck lover. I think the Memorized Deck part worth the price of the book. I will definitely get the book. Alex Hui

I bought this book and have read it. I am suprised there is not more chatter about this. This book is really really good. The methods are fresh, different and allow you to do some amazing material. One of the best books I have read in a long time. Can't wait for more material from John. Honestly, John's material is so good I think he should make the books limited editions and sell for higher price.

You are right, it is a very very good book, a lot of excellent material and thought provoking stuff. Some seem to prefer that John's book doesn't get too much attention - I am one of these. Jan

Jan---I thought about that before posting. My hunch is that it will stay under the radar which is fine with me but John deserves kudos for one of the best books I've read in the last year.

That's true... and on the other hand John is releasing material here that many people will probably not appreciate as much as it deserves because it involves a lot of MD work which I love. And there a very good mental approaches. His change of (let's call it this way) Hummer's mathematical Monte using a MD is so beautiful. I appreciate it a lot as I've done something very similar with the ParaLabs Picture Deck (except I do not want to see the cards either, the spectator has to describe in his own words what he sees...). But how many will do things like that?? Jan

If you do MD work, you owe it to yourself to get this book onto your shelf. There are some unusual ways of using the tool. I found it refreshing and a big inspiration. The Seeking the Bridge technique is wonderfully simple.

Where can I get this in the UK? Shipping from the US nearly doubles the cost for me. Any help would really be appreciated

Hi Fin,
Not sure if this helps, but I can send it to you first class for $22 shipping or priority mail for $24. That is the lowest I can get to the UK. Marshall H & R Magic Books http://www.magicbookshop.com marshall@magicbookshop.com |

Thanks Marshall, I'll do a bit of saving up and then get back to you. If I hadn't just recently bought a few magic goodies I would order this right away. Thanks again

Hey guys -
Thanks for all of the kind words. This was a really fun project to put together. Really nice reviews have been posted in all of the recent magazines, so if you are looking for other opinions feel free to check them out. Also, this Sunday (June 2nd) I will be lecturing on Penguin Live. If you have any questions bring them there and I would love to help any way I can! All the best, John Born http://www.JohnBorn.com |
