Has anyone teamed up for a short period of time with someone who has a booth at a mall?
I am thinking of sharing one with a person who has had one for years at a local mall, so I can sell magic during the holidays. I am just wondering what a fair percentage on my sales would be. I rather pay a percentage than a flat fee. I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks Jeff |

Hi Jeff,
This depends upon how they are charging for booth space. Just ask. They should tell you up front. Are they charging a sq. footage price plus a percentage or just a flat percentage? This is common in malls. I had paid up to 23% (without the sq. footage) within an amusement parks. But most malls would be much lower. They figure they can charge you such a high % since they are providing you with a high traffic volume. Those traffic numbers could be an illusion and you still have to get them to stop at your booth. Retailing magic is a tough business. You will get a great education. Make sure to keep your agreement with your partner very clear and one that you can get out of easily. Be very careful. I worked the malls for several years and very rarely made a profit during the holidays. The problem was the rent was extrememly inflated.
Another major issue with me is that our booth became a babysitting center. Parents would allow their kids to hang out while they finished their shopping. This more than anything prompted me to close all of our shops. It wasn't a problem with just the kids, the adults were just as bad. They come expect free shows and hang around to watch all of the demos. This isn't bad for a while, but then you realize what is happening and it gets frustrating entertaining the crowds all day for nothing. |

I've seen others here try to sell stuff too. The same problem as Christopher. And this is in Asia.
Good luck if you give it a try. JoJo
