What is the best clip/hook/snap method to keep a coat closed partially using an elastic cord? In other words I am using a few inches of black elastic cord to match my shirt. The elastic is connected to a device that is sewn/clipped onto my coat, keeping the coat from swinging open to expose anything inside. What is the best object to attach to the elastic cord so it will be an easy lock/unlock method?
Closing a coat naturally with buttons will not work. There will have to be little space in front of the coat to make the productions. |

Mike, I"ve used several methods for this. It often depends on the thickness of the cord you are using. One method is to sewn one end of a dress snap to the cord and the match end to the inside of your coat.
Another depends on the thickness of the cord. If it is thick and difficult to work with, sewn a piece of loop material to the end of the cord and sew a button inside your coat that the loop will slide over easily. If your cord is thin, you can make the loop at its end. Yet another is to use a fastener similiar to a ladies bra closure. Just a small hook and eye setup. I'm not sure why you want it to easily "unlock" but if you are keeping your jacket closed for your entire act, craft stores sell what is known as a "frog". It's a neatly design closure made specifically to hold you jacket together. They come in different sizes so you can pick how much of a gap you want. They usually fit over a button on each side of your coat. Those are methods I have used. There are many out there. I don't think there is a "best" method. Like all other dove work, it depends on your style and requirements.

Thanks Dave. Your information is described clearly, and is truly helpful. Each method you explained will be easily "unlocked" and "locked". Yes, my jacket will remain closed during the whole act. The reason I wanted a quick and easy method was mainly because of practice and rehearsal. I am currently working on an act with feather flowers, with moves performed using a dove production method.

Mike, I made mine from a black "Hook and Eye" dress closure. I looped black elastic through the eyes of the hook half, connecting a hook to each end of say a 4 inch length of elastic.
Then I sew the Eye on each side of the coat on the inside at the location of the button that is usually buttoned. I have learned Hook and Eye type closures are now made also for coats, thus they are larger and more easily connected and released. |

How about attaching a magnet to the cord and another magnet or shim on the coat or vice versa.
They will attach and detach very quickly without much fiddling. You will have to experiment with the strength of the magnet.

Thanks Bill. After reading your and Dave's post I did go to Joanne's Fabric store and purchased a black hook and eye package. I did purchase the smaller ones because it has several in the package. I am going to use your method of detaching from both sides so the item will not damage in the dry cleaners, because it will come completely off. I wanted the several in the pack because I will make several, in case I lose one.
Good idea Maps, thanks. I never thought of that. But the only problem is so many items these days are electronic. I have damaged my computer hard drive one day by placing a magnet on top of it not knowing what was going to happen. I have also damaged my car's security ignition also as a strong magnet was attached to my keys I did not know about. A magnet might delay my time producing feather flowers because of the metal stem and loop. But I will always keep your idea in mind if needed. Oh yea. The reason the word "quick" and "easy" was in my mind is because I was practicing using a elastic cord tied to the loops of two safety pins. I hated the part taking the time and struggle attaching and detaching the safety pin in my coat. |
