Hello fellas, I've been a little stuck in my coin magic for a little while now, I am very good at techniques, yes, but I feel that I lack of something a little more important, I can't find any concepts to apply to my magic. Maybe that sounds stupid, and it probably is, but I just want to make my magic a little more meaningful, and it's really frustrating to have only a good idea every hundred years (I know it's normal, but still). I'm tired of all the plots we all use. I can't stand to the normal "Hey, here I have for coins, now I have 3 and 1 here, now 2 and 2", I just can't do that anymore, I just can sit there narrating what they're already seeing, I have to find alternatives, and that's one of the reasons that got me stopped doing most of my coin magic, that being said, I thought it would be nice to bring this topic.
What do you think is the most artful piece of magic, specifically (of course) coin magic. I know art is a very subjetive concept, that's why I'm asking right from the beginning to respect everyone's opinions and thoughts about this plot. In my opinion, I find Miguel Angel Gea's routine "Essence" to be one of the most moving pieces of coin magic I've seen in a long time, the rhythm, the plot, the choreography, it just gives me goosebumps, and even tho the english translation is far from being as good as the original one is spanish (Because of language problems), I think you'll agree it's really nice to watch. Here's a link to that routine, you're gonna have to pardon me on this one, but I'll link to the spanish version, because it's my favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gQGQgI0jV8 I'm anxious to see what you consider "art" in our loved coinmagic (:
I hope you understand, my dear friend, that everything you are seeing is a lie, but everything you are feeling holds true.

Find a message you want to communicate and then find an effect to complemen or illustratet that message. When you stop letting the effect control your message, then you will find meaning and your audience will have an easier time connecting with you.

Not that this is very artfull, but while doing a coins across I say it's a test they take for school, vanishing and re-appearing...

I would have to say it is a struggle finding an " artistic " message for a lot of coin magic, but not impossible. I tend to lean towards gambling permises with my coin material, even performing with poker chips on occasion. I am fortunate to have a regular gig with a company that stages gambling themed events and I giuess I have used that as motivation for developing my routines. I will offer a piece of advice I heard from Rudy Coby in his recent EMC lecture that is a great guide for developing meaningful presentations. " Make your magic look like the things you love " Only you know what that is, but it is a very good starting point for everyone.

I agree with Spackle you have to develop a routine which the plot will make sense for what you are doing. Saying like, "Just like that" seem to be overly used. Creating routines accompanied with a creative plot will likely make things more enjoyable for you which will in turn make them more enjoyable for your audience.

I love what Miguel Angel Gea does with his routines. We need to bring this type of mystique back to coin magic. It's just like a movie. It's always about story, story story. A good story will take a mediocre movie and make it a box office hit. Same with coin magic...any magic really. If you weave a good story to go with your routine you will capture and entertain your audience rather than just fooling them. I believe it's important to make the routine 'feel' magical, otherwise you're just someone that's really good at hiding a coin. I believe that magic should be 20% psychology,30% mechanics and 50% performance. People still want to be entertained, more than ever these days.

Welcome to the Café OG.
Interesting question and at times I have felt the same way. And it would lead me in and out of magic over the years. I just got to the point saying "why am I doing this?" at times. Of course I love the art which has pulled me back in many times. And coin magic is the best IMHO but I do believe less is more once you learn the real meat & potatoes of what makes it work and work well. I think about that a bit more than the doing of all the magic at times. As to what's art, well, what's beauty in a woman? It depends. I love Gea's work and find similarities in Juan Luis Rubiales' work, and even the rapid fire & amazing presentations of Piehdtra's(?) work, and did I mention Juan Tamariz?...Always full of story and the accompaniment of fine magic and technique. But I would also find this to be quite artful in a different sorta way... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnbDnQJbYJA It is also quite masterful and not your everyday coin work, that you mention has come to bore you. I am but a mere hobbyist that has found a little gold here and there in magic, and very glad to share it with others. I have found some effects to be quite beautiful, others just fun to do and still others a bit much for my style of things. For instance, I have seen 3 Fly done very matter of factly and then done very beautifully set to real purpose and show, such as when done by France's Lawrens Godon. I guess it just depends on what interests you. I always just wanted to become somewhat proficient at the sleights to do some things and came to be a bit better than that as to coin magic, IMHO. Now with the abilities, I'm able to create and not just follow what others have left behind. I think a lot of the time I enjoy not so simply following behind. Anyway, good question and points, and again, Welcome...

Wow Doug, that book looks amazing! It's exactly what I've been looking for. I've taken to creating little stories as I work through a routine to make it feel a bit more 'mystical' but never thought to try and find if there were any books on the subject. I'd love my magic to be more theatrical. Not to over the top, but I'd love to create stories and scenerios around my routines, to really bring people into what I'm doing. I've ordered the book and can't wait to dive in!

Here's a great experiment from the mind of Jeff McBride:
Create a list of the most significant experiences of your life, all the high points and the low points. Now make a second list of all the Coin effects/plots you know. Now try to match a coin effect/plot to an experience in your life. I have used this method and it's really fantastic! Ben S

He got me in line for a very limited Druid's Herb Chest (Sliding Die Box) from Michael Mosher. You'll see it on page 40. Mine is a different design, but is PERFECT with the story that starts on page 35. Magic Logic is explored here. This applies more than ever to coin magic! Why are we doing what we do? Why does the coin...(vanish, change, appear, etc)? When you establish the "why", all sorts of avenues open up. Are you a Wizard? A Magician? A Trickster? Are you doing a puzzle that people try to figure out? When you "Enchant" them, and make them suspend their disbelief for a while, you REALLY make the "Magic" happen! It goes from a "trick" to a "miracle"! Doug |

Matching significant points in life with magic routines(coins or others) = priceless.
Bringing meaning to your programs takes them up a level. (as opposed to I take a coin and put it into my left hand...

To MB: That is one of my favorite coin routines of all times, thanks for reminding me of it.
