I am going on my first cruise this summer and want to have some things to perform. I will not be part of the entertainment just a traveler. Will need things for around the bar, at dinner and wanting to do some private readings as well. If it’s good enough who knows where it might lead me and if I am really bad the wife and I will have a table all by ourselves
So far I will be doing: Palms of the Desert/System 88 Boudoir Q & A Mental Logs Other mentalism suggestions? I want a couple of bar bets/tricks out of Gardner. Also, would it be a mistake to mix a little coin work in? Any and all advice appreciated. Regards |

Well, you're doing a psychic routine intended to stir up business for your readings which you will conclude, apparently, with your favorite selections from the bobo book, which, depending on the response, may offer an opportunity to hustle a drink or two afterwards. Are you a magician pretending to be a reader or just confused? Having been both a guest and entetainment on a cruise I can predict that whether you're good or not, no one will want to sit with you if you start shoving index cards and tic sheets under their lobster tails. If you are a legitimate reader, you can casually mention (let hobbies come up naturally in conversation; nothing's more annoying than obvious attempts to steer the convo) that you study the arts or that you do it as an avocation, and if anyone's interested, give them a short reading, no tricky stuff and no more than a minute at most. You'll be interesting, entertaining, and, as long as you don't turn into the "hey, watch this one", or hog the conversation, popular. In other words, if you're anything but the typiical amateur magician doing a trick to impress people.

Having been on a few cruises, I concure with the above post. Anything that feels even the least bit natural or pushy will be a big turn off for the other passengers. Remember: you are all on the same boat together...trapped. I think there is a "survival" mechanism that kicks in in situations like this where people may be even a little more socially warry of anything that feels like their crazy uncle doing magic. On the stree they can keep waling and never see you again. At a party..well its going to be over in a bit anyway. But on a big boat..you are going to keep running into eachother..a bunch.
That said.. not impossible...but just go easy on them. (I definitly wouldn't mix mentalism and bar bets) |

RCP,
It's been my experience that people in the real world DO enjoy readings and tick sheets. Every night after my resort show there's a line of about 15 to 20 people who want a question answered or want to take a picture. Last night a woman asked if I could look at her palm. While I took about 3 minutes to do so, a line of no less than 5 people waited asking if I was reading palms! Yes, RCP, they love it. No one has to shove a tick sheet or index card anywhere. They'll request it. They will request more and more time devoted to their reading. Unlike an unwanted, constant parade of magic tricks, YOU will have to limit the time, not to remain interesting, but to give others a chance. If you're good at the readings, and with SYSTEM 88 you will be, someone at some time will ask you to show their group what you can do. POTD or BQ&A will fit in casually and perfectly. You are apparently referring to my latest email on doing nice things for people when you mention bar bets. Teaching the staff a cool stunt is great. It's not a bet in the classic definition of the term. It's a cool stunt everyone loves. Have fun and follow your instincts. Peace, Docc |

And I might add that these resorts have been called cruise ships on land.
The guests are locked into the resort with nowhere to escape. John and Crowslide are correct about going easy on them, but that's what we should do anywhere. Be polite, be interesting. And live the dream. Docc |

Docc,
Isn't there a distinct difference between "Every night after my resort show.." and " I will not be part of the entertainment just a traveler.." in terms of how the participants perceive you? While I agree that people in the real world do enjoy readings and tick sheets..It seems that people would tend to hold a tourist stranger at a bit more arms length than guy who just put on an interesting sho...they get to know you from a distance first. Not saying it's impossible.. I've just seen the "hey check out this.." attention grab way too many times. I guess the question for me is.. There seems to be more potential for a feeling of "threat" if a relative stranger does impromptu mentalism than there does if he does an improptu card trick... How does one manage that? |

You adopt the Nate Leipzig approach. Get some interest generated but beg off performing. Get past the point of them letting you perform just to be polite. Then perform, briefly.
The big secret though is be interesting. Your performance, stunt, or reading should not be what makes you interesting. It should be icing on the cake. Then they aren't afraid to run into you again. Dan |

During the conversation work in that you have studied palm reading. You will have no time for anything else the rest of your vacation.

Will you **** off the paid entertainment by doing this?

RCP, why are you doing this? You are going on your first cruise. Leave your stuff at home. Enjoy quality time with your wife. If you are going looking for performance opportunity all the time you won't relax and you (and your wife) won't enjoy the cruise. Leave your stuff at home, leave your persona at home. Take your wife and your clothes and RELAX and enjoy the cruise, THAT'S what a cruise is for. The entertainment is ALREADY provided and it isn't you!

Sing a song on Karaoke night, ......you can usually find a song to segway into announcing that you'll be doing readings in the game room.
Anything to do with love or money will suffice. The game room on a ship is pretty much a library with some board games available, and its empty most always, and I've never met any opposition from the crew, except for an aweful Karaoke performance. Have Fun, SB

Do Key-r-Rect or some other 5-7 keys effect. Lock a spectator to the rail using a short chain and his belt loop... have him/her mix the keys in their left hand... and then have them hold one key at a time in their right hand... have them start throwing keys overboard until you have eliminated all but one key... this routine is dynamite... and scares the poop-deck out of the spectator.
