I suffer the opposite affliction: I strongly believe myself to be a pure mathematician, but since I am studying probability (and in particular statistical mechanics) people naturally assume that what I do is applied!

His rejoinder was that using it as a floor mat didn't take away from the beauty of the Picasso. I replied that while that is true, eventually that beauty would be hidden under all of the footprints. He was one of my favorite professors. |

Hold on to your hats here. Landmark is right.
I believe in a creator but this world we live in is governed by math. That was His choice, in my opinion. I am a bit of a math savant. Never use it except in business and Blackjack and to freak out people but the world is math. The reason you sit upright (presumably) in your chair has a mathematical formula. Do average people need to know it? No. You don't have to know how the internal combustion engine works to drive a car. But if our world is to continue to advance it needs those who understand. It is ironic as much as he hates the military he mentions defense applications. But the world is math. You may now continue the pointless arguements.

Fine sum up my whole post with one sentence Shakespeare.
Brevity and all that.

Hadn't this number already been published in the Cinco Library multi-volume collection, The Encyclopedia of Numbers?
