Hey everyone I need some help. I have 4 Chinese Coins I bought from a friend. They only cost me $10. They are nice coins, very shiny and about the size of a silver dollar. Now they are not real chinese coins.
The problem is, they scrape against each other so much and they have some ruff edges that when you slide the coins across each other sometimes they will kind of hook together and don't slide across each other easily! I was wondering if someone here could please help me out by telling me how to sand them down and buff them up, so they I can smooth them out. Thanks everyone, Chris |

Try a dremmel tool Chris. They are about 35 bucks for an inexpensive model that will buff out all your coins in a flash. I have sanded down rough edges on coin with mine.
Good luck, Jason |

Ah thanks Jason. I have one but it is in storage until we move.
When I come out to Orlando in December I'll bring the coins out so you can see them. Nice coins. Maybe I can get to the dremel this weekend. Should I use the sanding bit first to get rid of the ruffness then buff it? Chris |

Chris,
I suggest using a variety of grits of sand paper all the way up to 600 grit. Depending on how soft the coin metal is will determine where to start. You probably don't want to go any coarser than 150 grit. Start by cleaning up the nicks on the edge and perhaps slightly chamfer the edge. Then test for slippiness and catching. Once that is handled, then put a sheet of sand paper down on a melemine board that is real flat and move the coin around in circles. Start with 220 or 320 paper, then 400 then 600. After all that get a buffing wheel with jewelers rouge to put the shine back in. CAUTION - You may not like the result, so buy a few more of the coins. Use one coin as your test coin for each stage. If these are the thin dark brown coins, they may die if you try this. Kirk |

Just an added point on the sandpaper get a piece of glass and tape the sand paper to it. rub the coin on the paper and you will get a flat side. You may also want to go all the way too 800 grit paper and steel wool before buffing. Just my preference on that I do this on metal, wood, you name it
