Keep it secret, create 14 more, and write a small book.

Seriously though, work on it for a while, I created a trick about a year ago that I thought was awesome, used it for 6 months, and often had one small problem with the plot that I couldn't work out. then forgot about it, came back to it about a month ago and another method hit me that improved the trick quite a bit in my opinion. and it still feels like there's room for improvement. so what I'm saying is get real comfy with it, try new things, and make sure it's absolutely the best that you can make it, because it would suck to come to a realization that it could be better after it's published.
also, if you do somehow create 14 more, why not write a book? but that seems like a lot of pressure. |

Although I agree that you should let your ideas mature before you publish them, don't wait too long! There are big benefits to sharing your ideas:
1) You have proof that it is your idea (date of publication). 2) Others might build upon your idea, improving it in some way. 3) You've done something altruistic, so can feel good about yourself for a change! Regarding crediting, make a concerted effort to find out if what your planning to publish is original. Also make sure you give credit where credit is due. That should be good enough. If you later discover that you've re-invented something, you simply have to take appropriate action, e.g. alter your credits or remove the item from circulation. An account at AskAlexander.org comes in very handy in this regard if you can afford it. I've recently started sharing some of my ideas/creations on my blog: http://www.magiconthebrain.com/free-tricks/ I think this is a great way to self publish items. You can even password protect posts/pages. Minimum fuss, but maximum fun! If you decide to do something similar, you can get a free account at WordPress.com. Hope this helps, Marty |

For sure, the first reaction we have reading your post, is that all of this relies on the fact that it is new.
It has already been said above, but I do really this is the first major point: check with very experienced magicians (expert in the specific field of your effect) that it is really new. This is no insult of course. Maybe you've already done this check before creating this thread. |
