Hello Fellow 3-fly-ers,
I wanted to share my handling for the classic 3 fly plot using the one-ahead principle. It was essential for me to be able to have the option for the spectator to examine the coins before and after and end clean with the last coin. I have the handling I want to use pretty much worked out, but haven’t worked out the patter I want to use. Feedback regarding the handling is welcomed! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APxHBmwI9IA The main purpose of this topic is to build a reference source on this forum of PATTER that will fit 3 fly routines, i.e. story-line, analogies, reasons why the coins travel, etc… So please share your patter ideas!! I sometimes use an "Invisible Shelf" approach describing a special shelf in front of my chest upon which things are invisible. I act as if placing a coin on the shelf with one hand where it vanishes, then pretend to pick it up with the other hand -- as if explaining what really happens in a 3Fly effect. Of course, this necessitates a methods in which the hands never touch.

Agreed patter, other than telling the audience what they can see, can be a good thing.
Is there something you'd like to talk to them (your audiences) about?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

After a 3 coin production I like to talk about the properties of non real coins, since they came from thin air, they can violate common physics laws, from there on, I just make stuff up, it usually involves time travelling and being in 2 places at once, but it's fun.
I hope you understand, my dear friend, that everything you are seeing is a lie, but everything you are feeling holds true.

Just from watching your routine and it's vertical nature, I would create a story of 3 friends going shopping and taking the elevator or escalator to different floors. Give your coins names, (mine are the 3 amigos, Manny, Moe, and Jack). You could have a running gag on how they keep jumping around to different departments, one of them always missing the other two. One of them forgets his wallet and has to go back up. One heads down to the parking Garage to get the car, etc. You get the idea.

I have 3-Fly type effect using the CSB set with a story that "makes sense" -- "3 for All"
into This is a unique 3-Fly type effect using your C/S/B set in a story of three boys who are friends at school and get into a special kind of trouble. It will delight lay audiences and fool experienced magicians with a series of non-traditional moves and sleights. The three distinct coins are handled by a spectator. The coins are openly displayed on the fingers before and after each sequence as the ‘boys’ jump back and forth between the hands. All transportations happen between the hands with no extraneous actions, yet each coin moves individually from hand to hand in impossible ways. The story has several valuable lessons for kids and adults punctuated by multiple Transportations. ................... I also have a 3-Fly type effect called "Almond Brothers" done with nuts or candy -- but could use coins. (impromptu with any objects) A frantic mother tries to keep track of her energetic kids. So, the first uses gaffs in a new way while the second uses no gaffs but new Sleights. Once you master various ways of achieving the 3-Fly flow and results -- the stories will come easily.

Regarding talking about something to the audience, not really sure, I’m just looking for something to say other than, “hey look at what I can do with theses coins”. I like Matthew Wright’s approach with his Final Destination routine. I figured this idea of building a database (if you will) of different patter ideas would be helpful for those also looking for 3 fly patter ideas to fit their personalities. Here are some ideas of mine: Talk about how you place something somewhere in your house (i.e. keys, shoes, etc..) and it somehow just ups and disappears or its not where you last put it, and then you find in the most unusual place. It’s like it grew legs and walked away…You swear you put it here (left hand) and it ends up here (right hand). The three coins can represent three ghosts… Tell the spectator about an invisible force field/area in between your hands, in which you move your hand holding the coins into the area and one coin disappears. Reach in with your other hand and it reappears, and so one.. Charles |
