We are becoming inundated with young people wanting to join a primarily adult club... What is the best thing to do with them?
Our most recent application is from a 10yr old? We don't have an age restriction for the club. But am struggling to find a good response to the issue. How have others dealt with this issue. Should we welcome them with open arms? Start a youth night? Nominate a youth officer to look after them? Your thoughts welcomed. Neil

It depends on the nature of your club.
If it is an SAM Assembly, there may be an SYM Assembly nearby that you can direct them to. If your club is an IBM Ring, there may not be a comparable club for young people in your area. Some local clubs allow kids to join as members, but insist that a parent be present with them at the meeting. If a young person has a sincere interest in magic and there are no magic clubs for kids in your area, you might want to think twice about turning them away. These young people are the future of magic. |

I say let them in. make sure they are learning and performing the proper way. teach them what you know and let them know there is more to magic than the latest youtube video, and over hyped new product. This way they can evolve into great magicians.
remember these kids are the future of maigc, lets make sure they don't suck....

If there's one thing that the Café and the magic community as a whole has taught me, it's that young people are evil and must be avoided at all costs.
I once attended an IBM meeting where, because I was under 18 at the time, I was made to sit outside during the "meeting" part and the lectures. I was only allowed in during the "performance" part. If my family wasn't already fairly engrained in the world of magic it would have turned me off right then and there. I was not a bratty mouth-off kid. I was a role-model student and about as respectful as it gets. In fact, I really went too far the other way as a child. As I approach 30 I realize that one of my mistakes growing up was assuming that age equated to wisdom. It doesn't. Some people are Arse-Holes and D-Bags until the day they die. Many of them are Café residents. Bottom line: the Internet is going to teach these kids magic whether you like it or not. If you don't like the direction that Theory 11 and Ellusionist is pointing them, quit be-hotching about it and start being part of the solution. If you want to have an old mens club, by all means go do it! Hang out, smoke cigars, and trade dirty pictures of Ursula Martinez. Just be clear about what you're doing. The world is changing and, like it or not, the world of magic has to change with it. For all the encouragement I got from the magic community, there were plenty of crotchety old men who seemed to think I should be content playing with TT's and Svengali decks for the rest of my life. This is despite the fact that, as previously stated, my family was involved with magic long before I was born. Today I make a living as an entertainer despite all that. Still, nobody should be treated the way I was. So how do you handle the influx of young people at an IBM / SAM meeting? You thank the stars that our art isn't totally dead yet (despite the best efforts of the community), you take them under your wing, and you mentor them. |
