I agree with John, kids prefer magic for obvious reasons, I'll never perform mentalism for children, I don't want to annoying them and myself.
It looks to me: Hey Kids! As I like mentalism , you have to Watch me and close you mouth, you'll like it believe me if not you like it or I'll kill you!

While I agree with Parmenion and I tell people looking to hire me for kid venues I'm not for them once in a while I will take an event that is more family oriented in which case I will do two or three things to keep the kids excited, I also will make that show as a while quicker paced and more upbeat.

Well I certainly wouldn't recommend that approach for kids, ...or anyone else! ...and again that has nothing to do with metalism, a lot of "grow ups only" magicians would end up attempting to do a kids show that way, even if they were using sponge bunnies and coloring books. I wouldn't recommend an all mentalism show for kids (although if anyone has tried I'd love tohear about it), but adding a mentalism routine into a kids show is not any more difficult than adding andy other routine into a kids show and using a kid as a volunteer in a mind reading show can be just as rewarding as using an adult. I love in Gene Nielsen's book "Cool readings" that he specifically talks about doing the entertainment readings for kids. He takes their shorter life experience into account but recognizes that the events in their lives are every bit as important to them as the events in an adults life.

I'm with David. I never set out to entertain kids with mentalism. But funny thing, they show up with their grownups. I should ask them to leave???
Actually I did put wording to that effect into my original ads and FAQs. Grown-up (but not “Adult”) – A good night to leave the kids with Grandma - enjoy a night out with just the spouse – etc.; tried several ways of wording it. But these families kept showing up complete with kids of all ages. It’s not a huge leap to gear an effect toward individuals; in fact (IMO) if one calls himself a performer, he’d BETTER gear his act toward the audience he gets, not the one he fantasizes about. I found out by experience that the tweens are actually quite brilliant as volunteers. From magic I already knew the parents would dote over someone making their kids the star of the show. I just made a couple things a little more colorful to engage younger minds, and voila! You have family oriented MENTALISM; decidedly a step up from 20th Century underwear and balloon animals. Ok, yeah, go ahead, call me a snob
...what if I could read your mind?
