How far away does the audience have to be to adequately hide the gimmick system in Pavel's Super Walking Knot?

Depending on the lighting I’d say about 8-ish feet is the closest I’d let an audience get.
That said I have performed it in a club where the audience was no more than the width of a tabletop away (about 4 feet). This was a comedy club that had a big name headliner that drew an especially large crowd so the management kept adding tables right up to the performing area. In fact, we had almost no room to move about and perform and had to force our way through the crowd to get to the performing area. Luckily the lighting was from a series of pin-spots overhead and the balance of the room was dark. I watched Howie Swartzman demo the prop at a magic convention using two spectators holding the ends of the rope. The spectators were right on top of the gimmicks and did not notice anything. The rope is extremely well made and very deceptive.

Harry's post gives another major pointer for working magicians. Assume that the stage will be half the distance from the audience as promised. If you can't do the act standing over a table at the edge of stage, re-plan the act.
In practice, the audience should only see what you arrange for them to see. If that makes you too nervous to work, change the prop. That includes rope gimmicks. However, you are going to be really surprised with what others are getting away with nightly. That still doesn't mean it is for you. You are in charge of your act. A couple of years ago in a rehearsal, a lighting tech called down to my wife on stage about a trick she was doing. She does a zombie with a floating satellite that circles and changes distances from the real zombie. His message was that the audience would know that the little ball held up the big ball. Of course, that is not remotely true. But she changed the act. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
