Thinking about getting back into doing restaurants again. Only when I worked restaurants did I feel comfortable performing as I was getting plenty of flight time. Now I perform maybe 10 times ,or less , a year. I'm hesitant to go back to performing the same material I did years ago, for artistic reasons I've decided to completely discard all routines that I used to do on a regular basis. Does anyone here ever do a bit of spring cleaning of their material or does it stay consistent with a few changes here and there? Is it a mistake for me to tackle new material (at least performing wise) while getting back into the swing of things?
Thanks for any replies! |

I may replace one or two every once in awhile. Maybe add something here or there.
But I would never scrap everything. I have worked on and refined routines that work well. Why would I scrape them? Do what you know best. It will be easier to start. You can add or replace things as you get comfortable.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Yes I must agree, if you are just gettingback into the swing of things, you must do stuff that you are comfortable with. Then as your confidence grows introduce new things.

"Artistic reasons"!!! Sounds to me like you are performing for YOUR own enjoyment. An entertainers function is to entertain other people--not himelf. I sincerely hope that I'm misinterpreting your intentions. Otherwise professionals would call what you apparently contemplate doing: masturbating on stage. It got to the point, many many years ago, that my act was beginning to get boring (to me). THAT'S WHEN THE ACT BEGAN TO GET REALLY ENTERTAINING TO THE AUDIENCE. Magic is NOT INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING! A magician's 'job' is not just doing tricks! His job is to make the performance of the tricks ENTERTAINING. Magicians as a group, are often looked down on by other acts because too many 'magicians'(note quotation marks) aren't willing to do any more than just DEMONSTRATE TRICKS. Too many 'magicians'have no concept of PERFORMING tricks. --and definitely have no concept of using magic to ENTERTAIN

I would NEVER give up my "go to " effects, no matter how old. They are the ones I feel the most comfortable / confident performing and I will ring in a few new effects from time to time. As for spring cleaning - yes, when I found out I had Cancer and wasn't going to be driving a truck anymore, magic was always plan b, I sold off pretty much all I owned except cards, coins, sponge balls, Thumb tip, silk and a few other basics. I was never much into coins when I table hopped professionally years ago but I would do scotch and soda and hopping halves.
I took the money I made selling off other stuff and invested in a lot of coin stuff. So now I have a staple of my cards and sponges and such for walk around / close up and I am dedicating my down time during my painstaking recovery to learning coin stuff - both gaffed and slight of hand. I too am hesitant to jump back in with both feet - as the saying goes but would highly recommend that you lead off with what you know and are good at and slowly change it up as you progress. Just my 2 cents worth

Its not that I'm bored with the old material. Most of it was card material with what I think may be too much similarity in plots. No need as I see it to keep multiple versions of basically the same plot.
I should hope one performs for their own enjoyment to some degree. How can you entertain if you don't enjoy what you are doing? Some can fake it, I cannot. For the most part I am going to keep the advice though. I will slowly insert new material after some time has passed. |
