A cool video of a Lady Dancing Above New York City on a Tightrope, 1931. The city certainly looks like NYC, however, I'm not 100% sure it's not a process screen. What do you think?

That's the Municipal Building in the background. The greyed-out background looks like it is either perfectly correct, or a screen, as you say. But if you look at the people on the street, not one is looking at her. New Yorkers would have had to be a lot different in 1931 than they are now, for that to be true. Nice legs, though, and a well-walked wire at whatever height or place. (According to a WPA website, the footage was shot on March 5, 1931. They seem to think it's real.

The footage is real...however, while saying the woman is 300 ft. in the air may be accurate, there is most probably a rooftop 10 ft. below her (just out of camera frame) and since the camera never shoots from the street level, looking up, or overhead, looking down...I would say that that is what is being recorded.
Harold Lloyd, the silent screen daredevil/comedic actor used to utilize the same technique for some of his hair-raising stunt work on buildings. FWIW

I agree with Stanyon. Real video, but it doesn't show the full scene.
Certainly not the same as when Philip Petit walked a wire between roofs of the World Trade Center towers. The city went wild over that. |

I agree it is possible, given the limitations that Stanyon describes, that the people on the ground had no idea what was going on, above them.

Cool! Thanks.
Harold Lloyd was great. When I seen him on the big screen at the flicks as a kid my heart was pounding.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
