I generally don't use gaffed cards and prefer to work with a "clean" or borrowed deck when possible. But there are a few exceptions where I like a gaffed card or two now and then (mostly double backers). But once the effect is done, I'd like to ditch the gaffed card (get it out of the deck and out of sight) so I can proceed with effects using the regular deck. Anyone have any particularly artful ways of ditching a gaffed card? Generally I work standing -- so dropping said card in lap is not an option. So I guess I'm looking for reasons and ways to go to the pocket or pack or some other clever alternative. I'm open to anything.

You could always spread the deck in a fan motion like you are looking for a particular card and say something like "oh, I forgot to remove the Joker" and just put it in the card box or wherever.

How about the always cool UCCU from Jeff Kaylor & Michael?
Might be one of the cleanest possible ways to ditch. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=218

Thanks to all who have made suggestions. The UCCU is a great idea! I had not known about it. In the course of researching it, I found the TKO 2.0 which sounds like the greatest thing since sliced bread. Its apparently the only device to get two 100% ratings from WMS. It reportedly includes the functionality of TKO and UCCU. It could be a major commitment to mastering effects using it. But the demos look incredible. Even if I just used it for the included UCCU, that likely would be sufficient justification for getting it, as it allows for a lot more than ditching a card. The other suggestions too are great for when I'm not suited up with a UCCU or TKO (truly impromptu which is 90% of the time). I have to research the Gambler's Cop. I know the top palm, but it involves reaching to pocket for no particular reason, so putting the whole deck in might be more natural.

Put the box in your pocket and continue with your routine. Top palm, reach into your pocket, pull out the box, and stress that EVERYTHING can go out for examination; this covers the fact that you pulled out the box.

The Cooler is a pretty clever way to switch decks. A single or few cards...a really nice tool is the Switch-A-Roo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOPKbC7UzJk It won't do you much good if you don't wear a sport coat or jacket. You need that breast pocket. Other than that, just a simple to-the-pocket works! Doug |

I know that this answer to your question will sound unbelievably stupid, but just consider this: If you have a reason to OPENLY remove gaffs from your pocket to add to a deck, then it's not a big deal to put them back in the pocket when the trick is done, leaving the deck clean, right? |

I think that the UCCU is a pretty good way to store and use gaffs. But I think you should go for something more simple.
After you are done doing whatever effect you need the double back for, cut it to the second from the top. Peek the top card and go into a mind reading effect, forcing the top card in whatever manner you wish, asking the spec to place it back into the deck instead of you and place the cards in the box. After you present the effect and reveal the name of the selection, pull the deck back out of the box, but leave the gaff in the box. Or, keep the cellophane on the box, and as you put the deck away or pull it out, slide the double back into the cellophane. Just some ideas. Unless the spectator openly asks to examine the deck right after the routine, there is no reason to resort to palming to get that card out of play. |

After the effect is done I take the deck back, find/control the card to the top. Then one hand TP the card while you hand the deck back to be shuffled again. Or you can just do a deck change in your pocket as you talk about the next effect your going to preform. Hope this helps!

It's already been talked about, but I want to second on the Gambler's Cop. It's absolutely perfect for situations like this. Proper misdirection will turn it invisible. Also, you could put the whole package back in the card box, then "decide" to do another trick, and take out everything but the gaffs.
