Michael writes: "I had centered myself by living in Birmingham, Alabama because it was only a few hours from New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Nashville. I could easily get to any of those places and if necessary, be home later the same day."
I'd say centering idea is a great one for magicians who want lots of work opportunities. But keep in mind that in big population areas with traffic jams, there can be a lot of traffic delay/time compared to living in a less populated area. Silly Billy lives in dense central NY, as I understand it, and restricts his client list to only those living nearby. Very practical approach.

Circles on a map. Hmmm...The distance as a circle could be combined with time-to-travel boundaries that would look like the edges of a jig-saw bit. That's a bit complicated and I guess most performers just have a built in edge-allowance mix of shorter and longer times for the radius.

My late friend John Cooper settled in South Carolina, so he could perform school shows in all the neighboring states: Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. But it still meant at least 3 hours of driving to get to each show! He worked it out by scheduling his bookings carefully and staying overnight when needed.

I'm just north of Baltimore, so I go to Maryland, Delaware, southern PA, upper Virginia, and DC. Generally up to 90 minutes drive time one way.
How about your yearly mileage? Mine's about 17K. |

With me it varies. I would travel less during the winter months because of snow and ice. I will travel further distances if I have less gigs as normal. I will travel longer distances on weekdays because of less chances to get other calls.

The issue I see is, you can add travel expenses if the market will allow it. If you and another magician both have a base rate of $200 for a show
and you live 2 hours from each other, it would be hard to travel to the other market and add $ to your fee if the customer see's you both as equal. I just assume it cost's me at least 50 cents a mile to travel. So if my show fee is $4, I can do a show 100 miles away for $104. Cha CHING! |

I have driven as far as 4-5 hours for a birthday show. And it's happened a couple of times over the years. Yes, my fee included extra for travel.
I think part of it is the geography of where I'm located. I live on an island, at the bottom end. Some shows are in town, but some are up-island, and some are on the lower mainland. The heaviest population for our province is on the lower mainland, which is a ferry ride away. Sometimes, a show up-island or on the mainland also means that you need to factor in accomodation costs, as well as gas and possibly ferry costs (and time spent travelling). Sometimes I do shows on the mainland, even though there are other entertainers over there who wouldn't charge the same fee. It's because the customer decided that I was the best fit for their needs. I've also seen entertainers from the mainland sometimes come to my town to do a show. So, it works both ways. I do have some policies... such as not doing weekend shows in December too far from home. However, this past December, I made 2 trips to the lower mainland for shows, because they were on weekdays. One trip was for a pair of school shows, and the other trip was for a church show. - Donald P.S. I have done shows all over Vancouver Island and many of the Gulf Islands. I have driven as much as 7 hours to get to the north end of the island. In addition to shows on the lower mainland, I've even done shows in other parts of the province and into other provinces, which is further driving. It's all part of the adventure.
