Oh, my. Sad to hear this. I don't think there was a concert or demo that he didn't start off with his song "Freedom."

I heard that he opened Woodstock with a somewhat spontaneous performance. Using "motherless child" as the backdrop, many of the lyrics to "Freedom" were improvised ( and according to what I heard on Democracy Now, scheduled performers were stuck in traffic; so he had a lot of time). Yow! Amazing! He came out of the folk music era, thus being a beautiful opening for Woodstock. Thank you Woland for notifying the Café community. Richie Havens will be missed. Lynn
