Hi
I have just won a copy of RE: from Dave and Craig on this weeks Wizard Product Review. I'm not the most confident with sleight of hand (although I am improving) so a TNR has always felt a little above my current ability. Hopefully though the reactions I get when I've learned this will encourage me to push for a more complicated routine. I don't understand why people would dismiss a trick out of hand simply because it's self working. The first tricks I learned were self working and it was the reactions I got to those that encouraged me to explore deeper into magic. If everyone started playing football/soccer 11 a side, full contact, on a full pitch at 6 years old most would give up before they got anywhere. 1st Post. Play nice with me. |

Welcome aboard LondonMagician2012!
It says you joined the Café on May 20, 2012, but this is your first post. Can you PM me and explain how you are able to do that, so I can get my life back? Looking forward to your review of "RE" after you've feel comfortable enough to do so. |

What is self working, anyway? You will still need to perfect a few moves, timing and performing finesse. Even less technically demanding routines require a couple of hundred hours of practice and real world experience before you you can sell them on an audience.

On the WPR performance, I'm not a big fan of the fiddling around right before the second restoration

Here's my review.
Title: RE Creator: Chris Webb Where to get it: Most online magic stores and Chris' Website. Price: £21.50-£23.00 (Although as I said I won this in a competition) Advertising Copy: A selected playing card is torn into four pieces. Then with one piece at a time and the hands being shown cleanly at every phase the card repairs itself. The card is then handed out for examination. With this self-contained gimmick you will be able to perform a visual four piece torn and restored card with ease. The gimmick can even be personalized to match any deck. You will be taught the 360 version allowing you to show the card back and front in most of the phases. Filmed in HD with in depth teaching including extra tips, idea's & how to perform the effect with a signed card. Comes complete with dvd and a hand crafted gimmick (red Bicycle rider back) Running Time Approximate: 38mins As I said in my original post this is my first attempt at learning a torn and restored card routine. As a relative newcomer to magic I had always been put off by advanced sleights that would be required (I know there are many routines with varying levels of difficulty but at the time the only T n R I really knew was Guy Hollingworth's The Reformation). First off I want to say that while the restoration in RE is self-working the preparation is not. The sleights required are ones that anyone who has any interest in card magic will already know or will need to learn to progress toward the more complicated areas of magic. The gimmick is cleverly made and comes partly constructed. The small amount of construction required takes no more than a few minutes and is actually helpful as it shows how to also make any replacement gimmicks from scratch. The gimmick supplied will last for many performances. I found mine looked even better after twenty or so performances as the creases become deeper and it looks even more convincing. I did find I had to replace some adhesive although this may be partly my fault for not applying enough in the first place. The DVD is well shot and the audio is clear and the instruction is easy to follow. There are two handling options, one for a signed card and one for a non-signed card. I prefer the version without the non-signed card as the restoration can be seen from both sides during the separate phases. With the signed card it can only be shown with the back facing the spectator. I felt that being able to show both sides of the card and the cleanliness of the handling meant that you didn't need the convincer of having the spectator sign the card. Conclusion: I would absolutely recommend this to you. If like me you're just taking your first steps into a TnR or even if you're more advanced and looking for a nice visual, almost self-working restoration that will undoubtedly fool an audience. I apologise that I have not been able to compare with other TnR routines but as I said earlier in the review this was first attempt at learning one. Highly recommended. 8/10 |

As a lot of you know I am starting out in magic. A lot of times I was getting asked to do some sort of "tear up and restore". I didn't have one so looked around for something. Almost all of my time is spent in Restaurant and bars, so a torn and restored card seemed the obvious choice.
Given I am a beginner and having looked on here and watching WPR I looked at RE. With recommendations etc I bought it, especially given the claims of 360 degrees AND the fact that I didn't need a lot of s*****ts. What a big dissappointment! Why??? Well someone explain to me how it can be 360 degrees IF in the instructions you are TOLD to only turn it certain ways because you will expose something you do not want to expose. Point in case.......Lets say you are right handed and restore it in your right hand...... almost everything to your right IS exposed and if anyone is close on your right they can and probably will see something you don't want them to see. Not wanting to say to much for risk of exposure but they can see at least two "things". IMHO without holding the card "awkwardly" you can not cover that big angle to your right (as per above example). NOT with someone sitting within six feet or so. I soooo wanted this too work for me, but without someone explaing how it IS possible, in my environment its a non-starter. Of course if I am wrong I will admit to it. |

This is reviewed in the August issue of Genii Magazine by David Regal. Not very flattering...
