I have been doing the 20th century silk routine since I was a teenager, using a change bag to vanish the middle yellow silk. But I want to use the change bag for another routine in my show. I saw two clips on youtube of magicians vanishing the middle silk by changing it into a cane. This seems like a good idea, but when I tried it out with my Fantasio cane, the silk prevented the cane from appearing.
If I were to buy a diamond-cut yellow silk to vanish instead of the yellow silk that came with the 20th century silks, would the Fantasio silk to cane work? What are the dimensions of the diamond-cut silk that would work? Also, what makes the 20th century silk routine a classic effect that audiences seem to enjoy? It seems to me to be quite plain. (Maybe because I have been doing it for so long?) Anyway, I use it in the beginning of my show, because it's solid. |

If you are going to use a plastic cane, then it is suggested not to use a silk bigger then 12 inches. Same for the diamond-cut silks.
Next wash your can with soap an water, as if you have been using it a long time, it may be dirty. Dirt will slow down the action of the cane. What makes a classic? It is a classic because audiences enjoy it. It has stood the test of time with all audiences and professional magicians acts. Another word for plain, is easy, don't let the easiness of a trick think prevent you from putting the energy into presenting the trick like a miracle. |

I always use a cane for the vanish for twentieth century and also the bra trick.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd5FkEEA3kw kid show version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjqkNItGR3E Years ago I did a double twentieth century tie three silks together, place the knots in each pocket. Vanish two yellow silks to cane (one in each hand. The find the silks out of the pocket with a great 5 silks display. Regardless, use 24" diamond cut and metal cane. But, any 18" silk will work with the metal.

You might want to check the used magic dealers now and then for either a Walsh or a Harrakan metal appearing cane. I'm not familiar with the SEO metal appearing cane, so maybe someone can speak to that model. You can tell from the "oohs" and "ahs" in the video that Ian posted that the transformation of the silk to the cane gets a great reaction.
An alternative prop to the change bag or cane for vanishing the middle silk is a drawer box. Drawer boxes come in different makes and sizes. An Adams or Royal drawer box would be too small and "not professional-looking." Check around for something a little (but not a whole lot) bigger than a Royal drawer box. In my silent act performance of 20th century I use the appearing cane. When I do 20th century for kid shows where I talk, I sometimes use the drawer box instead of the cane. In the kid shows I also use the "Did you feel anything/Not feeling well today" gag as I pretend to magically pass the hank from the drawer box to the two silks the child is holding. I think the change bag is just too big for a silk vanish for 20th century, especially if you're using 18-inch silks. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

What about using a hank ball for the vanish? Laflin has an excellent DVD on the HB. I owned a hank ball for years and I was never satisfied with the loop handling. When I found Laflin's DVD and learned his methodology, I was so thrilled because his method is so natural. A HB will handle an 18" silk easily. It's now my go-to method for many vanishes.

Hello Caféinst,
In my silent stage manip act I use a silk to cane for one of the effects I do and the silk I use is a "true" 18 inch diamond cut silk. There are some dodgy looking diamond cut silks out there, some are made as a triangle shape, these are not the ones to use. Mine were obtained from Jay Scott Berry but any true diamond cut silk, ie one that looks like a diamond shape and not a triangle will work. Try to get a lightweight silk as this will help. I have used Fantasio genuine products for a long time and I read on this forum time and again about magicians not being able to get their "Fantasio product" to work. Most of the time this is down to either a copy of the genuine product or it has not been stored correctly after use. If you are going to buy / use a Fantasio cane get the proper genuine article and don't buy a fake one. I am not suggesting that yours is not a proper one but just give this as general advice. Canes / candles - For appearing canes and candles, store them open and extended slightly with a band on the end to keep them open. For vanishing canes and candles store them tightly closed, again with a band on to keep them closed. Never but never wash or clean the canes or candles with anything. The canes I use are over 15 years old, candles are about 5 years old and are still in perfect condition and work every time without fail. Hope this helps, Stuart.

I use a Lewis Cone, it will vanish an 18" silk easily. A really, great versatile prop giving you a clean vanish which can be performed surrounded. I bought mine from Practical Magic in the U.K. Excellent quality!

I use a hank ball/and or an appearing cane for the silk vanish, but I only use a metal cane. I have a Tendo Appearing Cane from SEO Magic and it is fabulous! I use it and also another silver, metal appearing cane for silk vanished. Either works great, and much better than a Fantasio plastic appearing cane.

I did this for years but have always used a metal appearing cane- the Fantasio plastic version did not have enough power. Also since it was long before commercially cut diamond silks were available I had my own hand cut and hemmed by a seamstress. Allowed me to use a much larger silk than normal.
Another powerful alternative I used at first was what I call (I am sure there is a formal name for it) a "pop" or "bang" cone. A triangular cut cone jointed by strong paper at the top end - when waved the cone opens with a loud "pop" and it is shown empty "silk hidden inside". When using the 20th C in trade shows to get a point across used a standard pull. Rick |

Sorry - one last point - I now have one of the newer metal canes and in another routine with a larger silk sometimes a bit of the silk sticks out the top - I do the transformation by tossing the silk high in the air and when it comes down I time it so I catch the cane near the top (not at the top) when it comes down - inertia cause the silk to go farther down.

I just bought diamond cut silks, red and yellow. They work very nicely. When I change a red-diamond cut silk to a red cane, it looks beautiful, a material transformation. I'll probably use the yellow one and change it to a red cane and then have the yellow one appear between two red silks in my 20th century silk routine.
I'll also probably change my yellow silk between the two red silks to a diamond cut silk for consistency. I use a Fantasio plastic cane, not a metal cane. When I was a kid, I got injured from it popping into my eye (but my eye recovered in a day). So I'm afraid to use a metal cane, as it's possible to get really hurt with it. |

Magicians,
I like your youtube performance that you posted. That was the video that actually inspired me to want to change the silk into a cane, because of the reaction that it got from the audience. It will be a great opener for my show. When you do the adult version of the trick, do you warn the lady ahead of time (before the show) what is going to happen? I would think it would be risky not to do this. |

I combine performing Silk to Egg with 20th Century Silk. It solves the silk vanish problem!
