Hi All,
I have been wanting to put together a solid few minutes of magic utilizing just rubberbands. CMH will always be THE effect when it comes to rubberbands but it can potentially be transparent in method. ( to be honest when I started out in magic this was the second trick I ever learnt, and I learnt it eventually from re-watching DC performance of it and just logically figuring out what was needed to unlink the bands with the fingers). So with that in mind I always wanted to add additional phases that 'countered' or went against the CMH method. I.e. as beautiful as CMH is the downside (and often what spectators suggest as a method) is that one second the band is taut, you do the 'move' then its unlinked, so based on Darwin's Theory of critical interval, its obvious that 'something' happened during the move, it's the only possible solution other than real magic..... So thinking of I would throw in Raw Linkage or Melting Point after to counter the method of CMH with the clean slow mo link of one strand of the band....but again downside to this is that if you logically linked the bands, then you should be able to let go of the band and let it drape on the other, which I think is the let down to the effect here, so to counter that I would do Missing Link as that allows you to drape the band....Adding a torn and restored is good as it will take their mind away from the methods of the others...I like it also cause you can leave them with one band only...I don't link leaving them with two bands as it then allows them to play with the bands and maybe work out CMH method... The argument also sort of stems from if you had to make 3-4 coins disappear, or even just one coin appear and disappear multiple times, or say an ambitious card routine, you wouldn't do the same method over and over again as that would lead to potentially figuring out the method, you would pick multiple and different moves and techniques to make each subsequent phase stronger or feel different. In terms of CMH, most performances will have the same method performed at least twice (one in your hands and one in their hands back to back) and I think that can be detrimental to the overall effect. So with that in mind, this is the set I have come up with with various effects from other ppl's work. Without their work and inspiration I'd be just going my day job at the office desk.... Phase 1 - Calen Morelli's SUSPENDED ( this can be left out, but I personally really like the outbeatness of the effect) Phase 2 - two phase of CMH in your hands only i.e. Unlink to Link then standard Unlink Phase 3 - Danial Garcia's Blink Slink Touch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds0urcC1bTY - I think this strengthens CMH significantly and provides a different method to the link Phase 3 - One phase of CMH in their hands Phase 4 - Marcus Eddie's Raw Linkage or Casshan Wallace's Melting Point - both effects look similar to eachother (atm the moment I only know the method for Raw Linkage) Phase 5 - Chris Kenner's Missing Link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPysG6P0Njg Phase 6 - Jon Allen Broken and Restored Rubberband on spectator's wrist as final Any thoughts or opinions would be welcome as long as it's not to the effect of CMH is the only rubberband effect that you would need period...cause that's not what I am after Thanks Baobow |

Hmm...first thought - that's a lot of phases all at once. I would suggest being prepared with a couple of sets of varying lengths. That way, depending on the crowd/situation, you are prepared for many phases for those who just can't get enough or just a few phases for those who like it, but will get tired out after the 4th phase.
It really depends on how you want to set up your own routine. I've got a few sets that are purely rubberband magic, such as CMHC, followed by snapped & restored as an "explanation" of the effect, followed by remote link, and then Touch as a giveaway souvenir. Or a routine of CMHC, followed by CMHC in their hands, then vanishing band in CMHC, followed by Ghost Slink or Slink with linked bands, given away as a souvenir. I tend to keep Suspended as a separate piece of strange, away from other rubber band effects. In that case, I want the spectators to not be aware that I know how to do magic with rubber bands - it just adds an extra power to the effect when they think there isn't any manipulation going on - almost like a weird hypnosis moment. A lot of other times I'll do a rubberband effect or two, such as Missing Link or Melting Point as a prelude to get into a card effect (a good pretense for a deck switch - in fact, there's a fabulous opener by John Guastaferro in 'Ready. Set. GuastaferrO' that allows you to make a deck wrapped in rubber bands appear magically, but I digress...) The main point is that I often will use the rubberband effect in between other card effects, etc. and then will often have both props on the table, and suggest we do something with both of them. Follow these up with something like Inner Circle or a variant of that, and you get a really nice mix of magic. Overall, you have a really solid list of effects. I would say that it will be up to you to determine how you want to build up your set list and present them. Many of the routines I do have stemmed from just experimenting with different ideas and routines on the fly as I perform to others. As I've continued to perform, I am constantly trying to hone the performance to see if little tweaks/changes here and there improve the reactions and experience for the spectator. Ultimately, only you can find what works for you. Just a few thoughts from me...hope this helps! |

Thanks sgtgrey,
Good food for thought. With the routine I have been thinking of above, I wanted more than just having rubberband effects as 'filler' inbetween card effects. My mindset has always been think of the 2-3 card effects that I want to perform with one being the opener and another the closer and throw in either coin or rubberband effect in just to show 'variety'..... I wanted the set above to be a standalone rubberband set much like you could easily do one for cards or coins. For example I think Roth's Standard coin set is Coin's Through Table, followed by Winged Silver, followed by Winged Silver, followed by Hanging Coins, finishing off with a one coin flurry with a jumbo coin production. Though in essence its coins disappearing, transposing and appearing over and over again, each effect compliments eachother by using different technique for each trick and in turn strengthens the previous one effect. As you mentioned, if the audience isn't interested, each phase is modular so you can stop at the end of any phase without loosing any impact or magic. And you could interchange the order and leave any of the phases out at any time. I guess time well tell by trying this out in the real world and in afew months I'll and see how it plays out |

A great selection of tricks there but I think 8 phases is way too many. I would do 2 or 3 max; do them slowly, let the magic sink in. It's the difference between them only remembering you did "a bunch of crazy stuff with rubber bands" and actually being able to recall that moment when the bands melt through each other. As much as it kills you to hold back, less is more.
You could break all those phases into 3 full routines. |

Thanks for the feedback and thoughts guys. I'm still contemplating a longer or shorter set. Vinny though your effects look great, they don't quite fit the set that I want.
