The Vatican library is now being digitized--40 million pages:

With 2.8 petabytes of storage from global data company EMC, the Vatican Library had to decide where to begin. In all, said [project director Luciano] Ammenti, the collection will take 43 petabytes of storage. http://www.thestar.com/news/world/2013/0......ine.html

I think it is wonderful that The Vatican is digitizing the library. At university I had a history professor who actually was one of the very few who held a Vatican card. He would tell us of all the great works to be found there. Many people forget that The Roman Catholic Church actually preserved knowledge; if it wasn't for the arduous labors of those monks during the Middle Ages, we may not have the works of Plato and Aristotle available today. The Roman Catholic Church does so much good and it saddens me that because of a very small number of bad priests, the whole Church has to take a bad rap. The Roman Church has the second largest health care system in the United States, some of the very best universities, and Catholic Charities will help ANYONE regardless of their faith or lack thereof. I have a good vibe about Pope Francis and we in the East are optimistic. The fact that the Patriarch of Moscow attended the installation Mass for Pope Francis - something which has never happened - and the fact that Pope Francis asked the Patriarch rather than one of the Cardinals to bless the dinner represents significant steps for West and East to heal the almost 1,000 year rift between the churches. Oh it happens here regularly. Those with an axe to grind will be here to cherry pick history and make accusations. Just wait a second.

I think it's great that the library, one of the greatest repositories in history, is being digitized.
No axe to grind here. |

This is great. I hope it's freely accessible.

As a lover of old books and libraries I am very excited to see where this is going.

I'd end up dead if I got into that library - I'd never want to stop to eat or sleep - just read.
I've been so excited about this since first hearing about it. |

My best friend from my very first year of school is an Anglican priest - he, his wife and myself have agreed on a fight to the death if there's ever a chance of one person being allowed in - and people think we readers are such passive people.
