I have this Balloon to rabbit, can anyone tell me whether it is a Milson Worth or something else? All the Hardware and the front bars on it seem to be brass. The top opens and there is only a door on one side for the balloon. Thanks in Advance.

Thank you very much! I bought it used a very long time ago, and it has worked better than any balloon to Rabbit that I ever had. I hate to say this, but it even works better than my Funhouse, which is still a great prop and works great, this one is just a tiny bit better.
The only thing is, the latch that holds up the you-know-what, that is attached under the top door right in front of the knob, broke off. Can anyone tell me what I can use to replace it? I see the screw, so I can undo that. I remember seeing a brass wall hanger for pictures that might work, I would have to spray paint it black and bend it flat. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. I would love to put this back in my show. I guess a trip to Ace Hardware (one of my favorite magic stores) in due! ACE

The item you are referring to is a "panel clip" bent to the appropriate angle, trimmed to the proper length and sprayed black. The clips are available at any hardware store but if you have difficulty finding them let me know and I'll be happy to send you a few. Lyn Johnson Milson-Worth |

I, too, bought one of these used. And my clip broke, so I'm glad to know what I need to replace it.
My question is, can anybody tell me the significance of the design in the middle? |

I love my Milson Worth props, but never understood the "Oriental" design stylings. I know it's probably an homage to Okito, but still...garish to say the least. I don't think the designs mean a thing (although the characters may actually mean something...hopefully something good)...just meant to look mysterious, foreign, and from a distant land. If you compare these props to other cliche magic effects of their day (e.g. Grant), MW still looks the classiest.

Worth magic was a small company in Sun Valley Ca. My uncle owned the bar next door and I spent much time over there talkling with Jim Simon (simon sign service). Simon was brought here from Texas(Fort Worth) by Joe Berg to build magic. Worth's stuff was always a cut above, because he was a sign painter first and knew how to decorate and finish the props. When he first came to America, Eric Lewis worked for Simon for a while. After Simon died, the company was bought by Charlie Johnson's son (Johnson coins). BTW, Johnson's first company (non magic) was in partnership with a Miller (thus the name Milson). Milson was the name he used after selling Johnson coins to Sam Laport.
The highest quality of magic building was under Simon especially when Eric Lewis was working there. they silk screened their own decals in house and used many designs. Originally they were older chinese dragons etc. The design you have in that pic was a more modern decal that Eric Lewis did after the work he did on the Okito books for dr John Albo. Another note was that much of the magic produced by Joe Berg (back in the beginning) was bulit by Okito and again the designs were there. Either way you have a top quality piece of magic to enjoy. too much story, but there are some that do find the back story interesting |

It was Robert Albo. But very nice historical lineage, thanks for sharing.

I have the same box that I used for many years .... 20+. The rabbits tore up the felt in the flap, and it needs to be touched up some, but it apparently held up better than I did. It's one of my favorite props.

Paul, you say "too much story," and we say...not enough! For me, and I suspect for much of the crew who haunt this area of the Café, your back story is pure gold. Thank you.

Is there a name for this particular piece?
I have one just like it but I've never used it. I've never had a Rabbit but I loved the box on sight and bought it used but in great condition. My father is a painter who did a lot of decal work. I suppose that is what appealed to me. -Mary Mowder |

Thank you AGMagic,
I guess I thought there might be a different sort of name that differentiated this balloon to bunny from others, like say, "Pagoda" or "Chinese Red" or some other descriptor. I guess I'm asking how they differentiated them for ordering purposes before order #s were so popular. -Mary Mowder |

According to Milson-Worth's catalog #3 (undated but probably around 1980)it is just called a "Balloon to Bunny". They also sold a "Circus Wagon" and "Sensational Rabbit Vanish". I would assume that if you called them you would have spoken directly with Lynn Johnson (after 1974) and explained what you wanted to him.
