Hey guys, I haven't been into mentalism for an extremely long time. I've always been interested in it but haven't really started studying it until about 3 years ago. However, I have been doing magic my whole life. That said, I'm 99.9% positive that I came up with a completely new idea in magic/mentalism last night. I need someone here who knows their stuff when it comes to mentalism and more specificly, with cards in mentalism. I want to see if my idea is new. If it is, it excites me a LOT because my brain is already reeling with ideas from cards to drawing dupes.
Just to kind of describe one routine without going into too much detail, You hand a spectator an envelope which they place in their pocket. From that point on, you never touch the envelope. You then have them genuinely think of any card (completely free choice) they then draw the card onto a piece of paper (or write the name, or not write anything at all and simply think of it) you can then have them open the envelope that has been in their pocket only to discover that there is only one card in the envelope, the exact card they are thinking of. Better yet, you can ask if they thought of another card before they thought of that one. If the answer is yes, you can immediately reveal what card they first thought of. I showed this to a friend today and he was really impressed with the thinking behind it. He had never seen the principle used before. That said, I need to be sure that this is completely original. Once again, if anyone with the knowledge can PM me, I'll get in touch. Thanks, Madison |

It may or may not be "new"...HOWEVER...what you've come up with may very well be unique and totally independent in its own right.
Whatever the case, I applaud you for creating and developing your own material! My mind skipped between dozens of possible methods and presentations while reading your post. My best advice would be to share more details with respected members of this forum via PM to see what the vets have to say and can offer you. One possible solution, just as an example, is Dean Dill's piece "The Revelation" which is a signature item of Dill's and brought to market just a few short years ago. Best of luck, J.

I've created a few magic effects in the past, but never a comlex mentalism one. So far, I'm loving where it's headed. Hopefully I won't get let down by being told it's been done before! Hehe Thanks again, Madison |

Definitely a different method than the one I'm using, and also a VERY different presentation/effect. Jerome, do you mind if I PM you? I want to ask a few questions about Revelation which may potentially lead to exposure. |

Whatever the outcome of your ability to "publish" or sell this as "original," the thrill of developing a new effect or approach "out of whole cloth" is self-rewarding. Never let someone tell you something wasn't "original" just becasue someone else thought of it elsewhere. It is original with you and there can be no "downer" -- only inspiration to do more.

Now I'm not saying the methods and execution are the same, but this seems like a pretty common duplication type of presentation effect. |

There are many things that make mine unique you can reveal the card in anyway you want. Doesn't have to just be an envelope. Plus its just a principle that can be used to create multiple effects. Hopefully some people can share their thoughts with me after seeing its execution.
Thanks, Madison |

Jerome's advice is spot on.
Send it to a couple of "names" and get some feedback. Jerome and Greg Arce would be a good place to start IMHO Steve |
