I'm actually working on my new stage act for my upcoming travels and concert shows. I have always been a collector of real guns and also "air" guns. What do you think if I perform Russian roulette with an air gun instead of nails & paper bags?
Just so you know - air guns are the 95% exact replicate of real guns. Instead of using fire powder, it uses gas such as CO2. The damage is pretty deadly as well. |

Here in the States,I think having any type of gun in performance,in a public area, would be very controversial!!!
I'm not even sure, there would be venues, that would allow it?

Hmm that has to be an obstacle even in Malaysia. I have license to own firearms however it does state that I can not flash my weapons in public.
I always wanted to add "guns" to my act. |

I don't think anyone needs to use firearms to get the desired effect. In fact I think it looks more like a Cris Angel stunt rather than a piece of mentalism. The props should never be the main thing in a mentalism piece, merely the tool.
And that's before we get onto laws, danger and ethics. Appear to put yourself and yourself only in danger when they is no way at all whatsoever that you are in danger and then spend your time working the mentalism instead of doing KOOL dangerous stunts. That way it does become mental magic and gets away from mentalism. Mentalism: Working with people's minds. - That should be the main part and not the props.

Shrubsole: Alright. Well said all. And thanks for the words
I'm have been a collector of air guns and real guns for many years now. Am just thinking to add a little element to my show. Meng: Seriously mate? I seriously don't understand why do you react at such. I'm just sharing to discuss. Well, if Zombie is gonna take over the world one day, you'll be just fine. They only eat brains. |

I did it that way for many years. Nowadays, though, special permits and/or permissions are usually required.

Simple equation needed here -
What's the risk? What's the pay off? Is there a safer way to achieve this without compromising the pay off? If the answer is 'yes', do that instead! If the answer is no, are you sue you are doing this for the audience or for yourself? Either way it is your life but there's nothing very entertaining about firearms injuries in the name of entertainment There is ALWAYS a safer way!! |

I would rather use a paintball gun than a real gun...but I'd rather not use one at all. Terry Kath of Chicago (back when they were a rock band, not a pop group) died trying some silly stunt with his guns. Not worth it...

C.J. Inner circle There's a lotta rambling in my 2366 Posts |
I say that if your venues and local laws would allow it (stupid things probably don't, these days), then go for it. It'll set you apart from other performers. With today's culture of over-safety, this could be quite a reputation maker. Just make sure that your method is the simplest possible - the more complex, the more dangerous. I once heard a Bob Cassidy mp3 where he talked about this in some detail, including the story of a guy who nearly got shot because his spectator thought he would be funny.

I was at a magic show, the magi did a effect with a gun used by a audience member. The spec shot at something, then flowers popped up. The magi took the gun back, and was just swinging it arround on stage! Someone yelled from the crowd..."your not suppose to point the gun, toward any one.You need to keep it pointed down!" The magi, then tried to explain it was not a real gun! The guy still yeld back,"Your still not suppose to point any kind of gun,at anyone!"

I would have responded to the guy, "When you watch a Dirty Harry movie do you yell at the screen and tell him not to point his gun at anyone?"
