Anybody else see this? Two escape artists were 'racing' each other to get out of straightjackets while suspended upside down?
That was a main pull, but there were several other stage effects presented. There was a really poor presentation, or I should say 'flat' presentation of a woman suspended/levitated by etc. a water fountain. The guy had no showmanship, could be seen 'setting' her down on whatever apparatus was used to levitate her and the assistant had a big bruise on her leg. The same guy performed a version of Impaled where a woman spun around on a needlepoint and then sank. My gripe? I just thought it was a shoddy presentation in both instances and wondered if anyone else saw the show?

I have seen the show in the past when it aired. And I know the magician you are talking about who you said had "flat" presentations. I am a good friend of his and work with him quite often. I am curious, what did you think of Ray Pierce, the magician who appeared on the motorcycle and then went into the cannon illusion?

Well, I didn't want to bring up names simply because anyone can have a bad night, but I will say that the illusionist on the motorcycle was a little too 'comically dramatic' for my taste.
I thought the choreography of his actual moves were a little 'forced' looking and his facial features were silly. A bit like trying to pull off a "Jason and the Argonauts" achieved effect in this day and age of Lord of the Rings digital effects. What played in the past looks fake today. (Only movements and facial gestures... even though the tip box was an older effect.) The biggest boff with the canon stunt was that the canon and the box weren't even lined up! Either the canon raised or the box dropped should have been 'penciled in' on stage notes and the 'bang' was like a loud popgun. The cage he appeared in on the motorcycle was waving back and fourth which I guess wasn't huge as the assistants revealed their nature in the beginning, but it keyed the audience in as to when he appeared. So, those coupled with the street guy who did three basic effects (although good ones) just made me feel this should have aired about 5 years ago. There wasn't anything new at all, and the TV guide didn't say it was a rerun, but it must have been since you've seen it before. I guess the more recent specials have really set a higher standard for perceived illusion as well as presentation. At least in the sense of 'immediate effect.' But, that was just my opinion.
