The movie was good.
Quite a bit of hypnotism and suggestion in it. You guys will love it or hate it extremely. Most will want to see it twice, I ain't tellin' why...

After the show, my wife said she knew all along, but her reasoning was unrelated to the story, but had to do with previous roles by that actor.

There are as quite a bit of absolute crap in the movie. All the hypnosis was just dumb nonsense.

Yes, it's Hollywood's portrayals in movies like this that leads to the much common misperceptions to the lay public about hypnosis. And then on another level even more to kid magicians and wannabe entertainers who after seeing the movie think "that's the coolest s*#t they've ever seen" and head to google, youtube and the Magic Café to learn how to do this...easily and quickly.
After just a week and a half in theaters I've have been asked about it (hypnosis as seen in that movie) and received questions after four of my last six shows. |

So I should probably see it just to be prepared then?

Yes, you might consider it. I've been working many schools and colleges so I'm getting the younger guys, but I wouldn't be surprised for you to get it as well. It reminds of when Cris Angel did his mass hypnosis segment on Mindfreak after it's first airing at the height of his popularity. The same questions - is it real, can you do that, how do they do that, I gotta know how to do that, etc.
Like you, after the first night of hearing these questions, I went out he next morning at the 11:00 show (for only $6!) and saw it so I was prepared to address it intelligently knowing what they were talking about. |

Not many will see it in the grand scheme of things.
I think even most of the audience knows crap when they see it.

The "crap" will have no impact on my clinical practice or perception of stage hypnosis. It is Hollywood. Everyone knows its crap, it purpose is fun not logic nor public education.
I really enjoyed the movie.

Actually you would be surprised the number of people that believe that hypnosis works just like they see on tv and in the movies. At least that has always been my experience in this part of the world. I once got a female call me asking me to help her son with depression. He was about to jack in university because of it. She wanted me to come around to her house pretend to be her friend. Then when her son came home "knock him out without him knowing". Cure his depression then wake him up and make him forget he was hypnotized.... I still get people afraid to look into my eyes. I have a friend who is a in charge of the emergency dept of a hospital and a top consultant surgeon. She is terrified of spiders and flying but even more terrified of hypnosis. A couple of years ago I showed her my intro I created for a theatre show with weird music spirals etc. She wouldn't look at it because she thought it was hypnotizing her. She won't even take my pulse when I told her I could stop it. She was afraid I would kill myself.. Yet she told me story where recently in the back of an ambulance she opened someones chest with a pair of scissors and massaged his heart to try and save his life! yet she runs out of the room if you introduce a pack of tarot cards! Just a couple of weeks ago someone refused to let me a talk at a business meeting because they had seen Danny Boyle's film about hypnosis. Ive not seen it so have no idea what they were afraid of.

Mindpunisher do you suppose those types of people would go straight "under" if you used a rapid induction? I have only seen two people scared of me because they thought I would try to hypnotize them without their consent. I don't have enough experience to make an educated guess if it would work. The first time I was doing a mentalism effect and the guy had seen me previously use the confusion tactic to make a person forget their first name. During the mind reading effect He looked me dead in the eye and asked; "Are you trying to hypnotize me?" I said; "No." He screamed; "No! Never!" and ran away. Reading your post really made me laugh because of the over reactions you mentioned.
I did wonder though, if I would have controlled the situation and used a bit of boldness, would a rapid induction have worked. |

It is always easier to take someone where they expect to go.
It is why hypnotists use the word sleep when hypnosis is the polar opposite
