Interesting indeed.
I rarely am asked for my drivers license but some schools have asked. I think in 20 years of biz I have been asked to provide insurance info 5 times! in the same 20 years only twice have I been asked for back ground check info. now I perform in lots of schools and early learning centers. as a matter of fact I have already performed in half a dozen in the last 2 weeks and never once asked any personal info. I show up they let me in they prop the door open so I can wheel my suit case tables in and then go back out to get the rest of the stuff. then I close the security door. that's it. same thing with schools but occasionally asked for my drivers license. now that being said. its true that taking my info does nothing to protect the kids. that is just the "feel Good" stuff politicians have dictated that needs to be done. it does not do much of anything. as stated before psychos are not going to stop by the office to check in before they kid nap a kid or hurt people. but we should be willing to comply with safety checks---with in reason. sam

The info DOES protect the kids, lol. The chances are low of a psycho barging in, and no, it's doesn't protect them from THAT. But it DOES protect them from much more common threats. Say a parent who lost guardianship of their child because of abuse decides to go to the child's school, and take his/her child back. If they leave their info at the desk, even if they successfully manage to take the child out of the school, the police can have them as a suspect much quicker, and have a better idea for where to look for the child. Finding the child as quick as possible can be the difference in the child being found alive or dead. It is rather common for abusive parents who have lost custody to try to kidnap their child. This is a much more realistic threat, and the security in question can prevent and/or lead to early recovery. We only focus on "psychos" wielding assault rifles because that's what's shown in the media.
Same thing as if a pedofile managed to get in the school, claiming to be the magician he knew was coming that day because it was advertised on a flier, the school would know he wasn't the magician because his ID was wrong, or if he DID get as far as taking a child, someone at the front desk has seen him and probably now has his info or a copy of the driver's license, and the police can find the child quicker. |

I work in a middle and high school.
Yes we have become more security centered. I have also worked in a maximum security prison as a counselor. As a performer it is wise to learn about ways to keep you and your props safe. A side note (G7), I hope you all leave your realistic bang guns out of your school programs. Sewiously yours Harris aka dr laugh 4u

I did a show last week at an after school program at a catholic school. All the outside doors were locked, and I had to ring a doorbell and wait for someone to get me.
It didn't bother me at all, the only downside was that I had to get my sister (she was in the car) to hold the door open for me so it didn't lock. |

I am doing a magic show for a day camp for a federal arsenal this week. They told me to come about 30 minutes earlier. They are going to check my record and go thru my props. No problem, it is fine with me. I am glad they told me in advance. I would have felt uncomfortable if they would have told me at the spot because I am always anxious to set up my props when I arrive at a venue.

I heard that the amended rules that they are rolling out at all schools will require any magicians to reveal the secrets to all their tricks before they are allowed to enter the premises. Of course if you have Jolly Roger's Cloth Of Invisibility, you should have no trouble getting past the front office.
