Does anyone know what these illusions were? I'd like a description of their effect. No methods, just what the audience sees. All I know is the vanishing illusion involved vanishing a group of people, and the race care illusion involved a "race" between a car and a motorcycle.
Thanks

Not sure what you are referring to as the "Vanishing Illusion", but the other one sounds like it might be one of the items that he designed through his amusement company for the midway.

Thanks Blair, interesting.
Here is a bit more on the vanishing if it helps, from a patent description: "Our invention relates to a method of and apparatus for producing theatrical illusions, and more specifically considered it relates to such method and apparatus as are adapted to produce the illusion to the spectators of a plurality of persons vanishing suddenly and simultaneously. The principal object of our invention is to provide a method of an apparatus for producing the illusion of a plurality of persons suddenly and simultaneously vanishing from the view of the spectators, portions of each person apparently being visible to the spectators until an instant before their supposed simultaneous vanishment. With the foregoing object in view, our invention contemplates the employment of apparatus whereby escape or concealment of the persons is seemingly impossible."

Is this the Dizzy Limit? Want to think I heard that was first used on a car, but I could be wrong.

BRodgers,
I will try to answer your question on vanishing "a plurality of persons". You can find the patent in the secret session: magic patents- a list. The patent number is 01586863. You have to understand reading text and blueprints. But the crux is the description (of) number 17. I can't give you specifics here, because it's an open forum. But to give you a hint: think of the Jarrett Pedestal. As far as I know this illusion is never build, perhaps it is not practical at all. |

MagicalDragons,
The Dizzy Limit is a creation of Oswald Williams. As far as I know it was used at first to vanish a person. In the second half of the century it was used by Doug Henning to vanish him together with a motorcycle. Siegfried & Roy used this illusion to change a lady into a crocodile. In the meantime Mark Wilson used the principle for vanishing a car. Later on David Copperfield did the same as Henning, with a different design. |

The answer to the question of the "race" you can find in the book
Thurston.the last greatest magician in the world (Steinmeyer) on page 217. It was not an illusion in the common cense of the word. It was a "special effect". Steinmeyer: "It was a "raincoat and whiskers" play called Villa Captured and (later) "...meant very little in the magic show". The special effect was created on stage with lights and sound. |
