Can you please guide us on the laws on using music licensed by BMI, ASCAP and SEASAC? When we are fine in using commercial vs buyout? Thanks!!

"When you buy an audio file, software, or CD, even those specifically marketed for business purposes, the purchase price covers only your private listening use, regardless of how they are labeled. Once you decide to play any copyrighted music publicly, you need permission from the copyright owners.

BMI Licensing FAQ
http://www.bmi.com/licensing

"Copyright owners enjoy a number of different rights including performance rights, print rights and recording rights. Rental or purchase of sheet music or the purchase of a record does not authorize its public performance."

ASCAP Licensing FAQ
http://www.ascap.com/licensing/licensingfaq.aspx

"Q: Do I have any other option to obtain the required authorization to perform copyrighted music?
"A: Yes, while SESAC offers the convenience and low cost of a blanket license authorizing the performance of all of the songs in the SESAC repertory, you have the option of contacting each copyright owner of each song you wish to play. As an alternative to a blanket license you can negotiate a separate license agreement directly with each copyright owner of each song you will play."
