Hi guys,
I've finished making a black art table to help make my stuffed bunnies out of a hat routine work. I'm trying to work out a way to make a false bottom on my top hat. I need it to come off or slide up when I place it over the whole on the table. Any ideas on the best way to do this? Are their any plans in books on how to make it? I have Mark Wilsons book and couldn't find anything there. Cheers Kel |

Most of the gimmicks I have seen for hats are designed to hide something that is already in the hat. I would think that you could remove the top of the hat and replace it with a thin sheet (less than 1/8") of plywood covered in the same material as the hat. A hinged trap door, that opens into the hat, could be cut in the plywood to allow access to the trap in the table. The cloth covering could probably act as the hinge so all you would need is a stop to keep the trap from opening the wrong direction. The stop could be a dado cut in each of the two plywood pieces on the edge where they meet on the side opposite from the hinge.
In performance, try not to show the outside top of the hat. Show only the inside view to prove it is empty. The shadows will help hide the trap.

Hi Guys,
I like the idea of a trap door on the table openning downward into the gimmick...I still have the piece left over from the hole I cut out so I'll whack a hinge on that today (thanks Tim) If I cut the current bottom of the hat leaving a small part attached, when I place the hat on the table and push down the trap door opens into the table gimmick and the bottom of the hat sticks to the door with valcro going down with it? I could use the spandex to cover the bottom of the hat at the start to hide the false bottom (this would come off when I push down also. It's a no frills version, but do you think that could work? P.S. I don't want to sacrifice my wifes yoga pants unless it'll work lol |

I think the Cannon Ball Production method (Hoffmans) works easier -and- you can put the hat on a kids head for a quick laugh, because the hat is ungimmicked.
I used the cannon ball method impromptu, to produce a six pack of green cleaners, from a cardboard box, at a party in the owner/inventors home.

I like this idea best. From the audience viewpoint, it would look like a normal top hat. Once on the table, it would be very easy to simply push your hand through the overlapping spandex into the well and produce whatever you are going to produce. The spandex snaps back into place, and VOILA! Hat looks normal again.

Thought about that as well Mike, but my well is actually quite deep (Tube) because of the amount of things stored in it....

While attending an Abbott's Get-Together Convention, I seen an excellent performer drop billiard balls into a top hat that was setting at one end of a long bench. You could see under the bench as well. Periodically, he would drop a ball from several feet into the top hat. At the conclusion he lifted the hat and turned the interior toward the audience. It was completely empty.
It was an excellent an puzzling illusion. Fooled the heck out of me! |
