This bit just came to me, but I don't know if it'd be funny or scary, and I wouldn't wanna scare the kids! I shave my head bald, and thought it would be funny to start the show wearing a silly hat, the kind that shows hair underneath (similar to the mullet hat), and a few minutes in the routine I have them yell "ball" (to make a ball disappear) but I pretend that I heard one of them say "bald" and my hat falls off and I'm now bald.
Would that be scary or funny? And a question: Anyone when performing for kids do a few things for the adults before you leave to show that you do adult magic too to try for other bookings, such as weddings and such? |

I think it would be funny.
When hired to do a children show, everything I do is directed towards the children. I don't use my show to sell adult magic. I do hand out business cards, and photo's that have my contact info on them after my show when I am greeting the children. You could do something like that maybe.

While my show is purely directed at the children, I always include some magic that impresses the adults, as well as the children. For instance, I do a color changing silk routine using a dye tube.

I think it is important to have the entire show directed at the kids...since that is what we are being hired to do. However, that DOESN'T mean that the show can't be entertaining to the adults as well.
The adults tend to have fun watching their kids have fun. In my stage show, however, I offer both the silly kid's stuff, along with some serious magic to make it fun and entertaining for all.

I agree with Mike. We are there to entertain the children. I have been known to incorporate a joke once in a while that only adults would understand, but only while doing something that has the children engaged.
I have heard adults laugh during my shows, and be amazed by the tricks I perform. But, I am not there to try and sell adult shows. I belive if you loose the children with one routine, it's very hard to get them back. If the children are having a great time, so will the adults.

You could make your bald head into a "magic trick" by making your hair disappear when you cover your hat/wig with a silk, then remove it. If you are a good performer, you will entertain kids and adults alike.

Thanks for all the replies! And as far as doing something for the adults, I meant before or after the show, close up for them, not during the kid's time.

Many kids are taught not to point or make fun of others. So as long as you make your hair vanish with a smile on your face in jest, it won't be scary or put the kids in an awkward situation since they will realize it's intentional and that you are having fun with them. And yes, I personally think it's a clever and funny joke.
I also love doing adult magic, so I understand your dilemma/concern. I prefer to mingle with the kids before a kids show so that I don't send a mixed message. Once I've impressed the adults with my showmanship during the kids show, I find that there are ways to subtly make them aware of my other talents after the show without coming across as a peddling salesman. After the show, they will naturally ask for business cards, perhaps offer you something to drink, or certainly need to write out a check or pay you cash. All of these situations allow you to show off your close up skills with cards, cups, pens, cash, etc. as if it's completely unrehearsed and unplanned if you approach it in an off the cuff manner. For instance, I might jokingly tell the client "and now for my best trick, I will make your money disappear". But just when they think I'm simply going for a cheap laugh, I'll jokingly say "check this out" and proceed to have the check they just signed over to me immediately vanish and reappear inside of a sealed envelope within my zippered up wallet. - Gary |

Gmsmagic1, that's an excellent concept, I might just work out my own idea from that, thanks!

I would take it out for a few test drives.
It would work for me, as I do bald jokes throughout my programs. Last Saturday at a gig, I heard a young lady (age about 6) compliment one of the actresses hair. I took off my hat, and asked her if she liked my hair. Quietly, she replied, you don't have any. Harris still with the N0-Hawk.
