Most of us have heard the radio commercial for the U.S. Army
"BE! ALL THAT YOU CAN BE!....IN THE ARMY" While driving home, I had the bitter sweet opportunity of hearing it again. It excites and disappoints me. You see, several years ago I was visiting with a friend who was a Program Director for two radio stations. He was dubbing several radio spots in the station studio. I was fascinated with the equipment and process of producing radio commercials. One radio spot required a live voice to simply say "Be all that you can be in the Army". As is customary, he did several spots of the same commercial using various tones and for kicks had me do one as well. A week later he called me to mention he had a huge problem. Turned out that the reps who hired his voice over company picked MY VOICE! Initially I was excited but the problem was if the work was to be paid out, the broadcast company that owned the station, would technically have to pay me as well as I wasn't even employed by them! Furthermore, my Program Director friend could be in trouble if I decided to surface and point out that it was not his work at all. He explained the only way to make everyone happy (Army, Radio Station, and Station owners) would be to say nothing at all - allowing uncle sam full rights to the radio spot, radio station to get paid, and my friend remain employed in an already cut throat industry. Well once in a very long while, that spot is used on various radio stations - and yes it's mine. Love it and hate it everytime. I've experienced this private hell no matter what radio format I ran to - Country, Rock, Talk, and Contemporary...Ugh! that voice! |

Look at it this way Randy,
You have already done your voluntary service for the military.

Couldn't your friend tell you were a friend? As long as he didn't say it was his voice I don't see a problem.
