I recently bought a book by Rice on the Sympathetic Silks from the S.A.M. convention. I bought it because it seemed interesting, it was cheap, and I had read about it in Tarbell (I think he said that Houdini performed it?). I didn't expect the Sympathetic Silks to be so amazing to audiences.
Then I decided to go to youtube to find performances of it. And I found Paul Potassy's performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uXWeFBHFw8 My question, "how does he do it?" is not literally how does he do it, since I have Rice's book. What I would like to know is how does he make a seemingly boring effect so interesting? He not only made it look impossible, but he captured the whole audience, myself included. What is his secret? I want to have a stage presence as powerful as this. |

By connecting with his audience. It is the emotionally byplay, the friendly "you think you know, but maybe you don't" banter, the sheer affability of his persona that makes him (not the trick) entertaining.

Also check out Levent and his Not/Knot routine... A different justification for the traveling knot. I am Not sure if he has instruction on this yet...

If you read the review of Arnold Furst, it is true that Houdini performed the Sympathetic Silks!
In the first part of his evening show, Houdini performed as "normal" magician. |

The core of the performance of Potassy is connection (he spoke three languages at once(!) in his performances) and ELEGANCE.
His audience liked to be a part of his performance. |

I recently purchased the 3-Disc Potassy set, and as John stated, "elegance" is the perfect word to describe the man. The tricks alone are good, standard fare but strong. But Mr. Potassy's presentation, beginning with his SS routine, never strayed from keeping the audience first and made the effects magical. The interview by Max Maven was also quite a treat. I'll be considering the purchase of some quality silks soon, having now been re-energized by a true master.

Potassy is a brilliant performer. In a couple of weeks, I'll be visiting him and his wife in the Philippines and you know we will be discussing the sympathetic silks at some point.
Personally, I love the sympathetic silks and I perform it at every opportunity. It's one of those effects that truly packs small and plays big When done correctly it can be utterly baffling to the layperson.

One of the lessons we can learn from the elegance of Potassy is: never-never-NEVER embarrass your audience. They are your clièntele!!!
At least they're offering their interest/attention to you as the performer. So you have to be humble and thankful; be happy w I t h them, not standing a b o v e them. Laugh w I t h them, not a b o you t them. |

Sorry, the auto-corrector played a trick.
It has to be: ; be happy with them, not standing above them. Laugh with them, not about them. |
