I've always liked this song but I had never actually seen it performed or knew what the 'Big Bopper' looked like. Not what I had expected!

It's kinda surprising to see what a pop star could look like back in the '50's!

He was a Texas DJ with a novelty song hit who died in a plane crash on his one and only performance tour. Waylan Jennings said he was a woman chasing all night drinking crap shooter who was in some kind of trouble most of his life. Sounds like a real fun guy to me.

Yes, he died in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. Known to this day as "the day the music died."

Ha! I'd never seen his face before. Thanks for the link, rockwall.

The Big Bopper is also credited for making the first music video in 1958.

Wow, I didn't know that about him. You're right though. He does sound like he was probably a fun guy.

American Pie. Great, great song. So-o-o many great lines.

OK, back on topic, seeThe Buddy Holly Story on stage if you have the opportunity.

The Big Bopper plays well in it.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

Talented guy for sure. I heard his son tried to follow in his Dad's footsteps, but it never worked out for him.

Waylon's wife, Jessi, said Waylon told her that when he gave up his seat on the plane to The Big Bopper, Buddy told him ( paraphrase ) “I hope your bus freezes up!” and Waylon joked back a reply, “Well, I hope your plane crashes".

Jessi said that Waylon, being a country boy, was very superstitions and what he said about the plane bothered him the rest of his life.

Oh, I don't know.

"Jay Perry Richardson took up a musical career and is known professionally as "The Big Bopper, Jr.," and has performed around the world. He has toured on the "Winter Dance Party" tour with Buddy Holly impersonator John Mueller on some of the stages where his father performed."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Bopper

And here's another little note for Al.

"A lot of people don't know that my father actually had two number-one hits before "Chantilly Lace" was recorded," Richardson said, referring to "White Lightning" and "Running Bear." Penned by the Bopper, both tunes launched the careers of George Jones and Johnny Preston, solidifying his talent amid industry heavyweights.

Convinced that music and television went hand in hand, he filmed himself singing along to three of his own recordings - long before MTV - even coining the term "music video" only weeks before his death."

The Big Bopper Jr never met his dad. He was still in the oven when his dad died.

Here's piece of worthless trivia. A few years ago when we were at a Dion concert he told us that the third seat on that airplane was reserved for him, but he was too cheap to spend the extra $50 for the charter flight so the Big Bopper took his seat on the plane, and Dion road in the bus.

I'd read that in a story about Dion a few years ago too.

Dion said that when he was a kid he lived in a second floor apartment and his parents paid $50 a month for rent, so he kept his 50 bucks and road the bus.
