Many cars have a scheduled check engine timer to go off after a specific millage. Also if fluids are low the like would come on.

Dennis, are you sure you aren't confusing this with normal maintenance checkup functions? "Check Engine" typically requires codes to read for reasons the light came on in the first place and if not checked / fixed, could cause damage to the engine.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Check engine light can come on for a huge list of different reasons. Many expensive, and many simple and cheap. Somewhere like autozone will run a free diagnostics on the car and tell you for free what's wrong with it. Although be warned, occasionally they are wrong. It's rare, but it can happen.

I agree you should look or get someone to look under the hood as soon as possible.
If you run it completely out of water or oil, the light will come on. May be burnt up, but you still need to check it. Tom

I have a check engine light that comes on periodically. It's from one bank or the other running lean (dirty injector, or bad gasoline generally) When it first happened it was usually cause the engine "hiccuped" and the light would come on. After 3 clean starts the light would turn itself off. That was by factory design.
Later the light would come on and stay on but it was for the same reason. I would just leave it on because I knew it wasn't a serious issue. I got so used to having it on I just forgot about it. I actually went to get my emissions tested one time with the check engine light on. lol! The guy was like "hey man, you know you're never going to pass with a check engine light on right?" D'oh! Anyway, I left the emissions place, disconnected the battery to reset the light, put some gumout in the tank, ran the car for about 150 miles without the light coming back on and retested a week later or so. Passed no problem. This year I remembered to reset the light, put the injector cleaner in and drove around for a week or so, then went in passed the test. I've run just under 1000 miles since and the light hasn't come back on. If they say it's a blocked injector (or two or more) beware of having it replaced. It can be a pricey job. Oftentimes the problem can be solved just by running a tankful of gas with some fuel injector cleaner in it. Or by having your mechanic do a pressure cleaning of your injectors, which is much cheaper than replacing them. |

The light in my 2003 4Runner comes on when it's time for an oil change.
Well...when the manufacturer claims it's time for an oil change.

Wow! Thanks everyone! Lots of helpful posts and advice from all of you.
Well, he hooked it up to the machine and there was no noticeable code that came up. He said this will occasionally happen if a bit of dirt gets into the engine somewhere. He turned off my light and said watch it and if it come on again, they will investigate further. Frankly, I was not satisfied with that evaluation. Maybe if it DOES come on again, I will follow Bob's advice!
