Ok question for you all, when doing impromptu / street hypnosis, what are your favourite things to get people to do, apart from the obvious, sticking people or name amnesia ?

I don't know anyone that does impromptu/street hypnosis.

My favorite thing to do with street hypnosis is learning about how to do a stage show and get paid. Simply I don't know any street hypnotist that make money other than the ones who teach it so I don't do it either. That and there are "undesirables" on the streets these days.

Even though most of my work these days is stage work, I still offer walkaround entertainment for outdoor festivals. I know it's not exactly street, but I still get work in this area.
I have a booking coming up where I'm doing two large outdoor stage shows with roving around the showgrounds in between. Anyway, back to the original question: The key is to treat it like any street entertainment and gather a crowd around to watch. Then think of skits where your volunteer can interact with the gathered crowd. Just like on stage, a lot of what you do depends on the person you have in front of you. For example: Experience tells you it's no good getting them to do a lot of verbal stuff if the crowd can't hear them, and it's no good doing skits that benefit from big facial expressions if they aren't very expressive that way. Generally though, issuing challenges once stuck can be fun: Wallet, wad of cash, car keys if they can unstick themselves etc. Hypno-highs can often go down well with some younger festival crowds too. |

I am glad magicians don't have that same attitude towards other magicians who perform just for the love of magic while not necessarily making any money. Not everyone wants to become a stage hypnotist. Some simply want to share some entertainment with others. (Granted I totally get some people's beef with the lowering of the bar possibly sullying the image of all hypnotists. That can be a valid concern.)

I guess I'm just not the type of person who considers sticking someone's hand to their hip or a trash can is all that "entertaining."

I guess it would depend on how much exposure you have had to hypnosis. I would venture to say that most people in my town haven't seen a hypnosis show. The most minor of phenomenon would blow people away. From what I read on here it sounds like it is saturated in the UK; that absolutely isn't the case here.
I would hope that a person would eventually add more to their repertoire than just sticking a hand, though.

The edinburgh festival started here this week. I got talking to one of the street acts from israel. A unicycle juggler a nice guy. I mentioned I used to be a full time performer doing hypnosis. He was really impressed asked me if I would do a street show with him. He also asked if I could get someone to give me all their money....He wasn't joking was serious!
The main skit that gets "most" street hypnotists off is when someone head flops forward and their eyes close....... if they get to stick a hand to a bucket that usually gives them multiple orgasms. Amnesia ( for 10 seconds) is the holy grail. Now that's entertainment..... you won't see any street hypnosis shows around here though because even the street shows need insurance and permission to perform in the streets. Although I think the odd nutter tries to have ago in pubs. Its not that common though. Even street jugglers are more professional than street hypnotists and some even make a living. Magicians helping magicians is one thing.... But apart from using the word "hypnotist" I don't see stage hypnotists as being the same as street hypnotists. Two different things. |

I also don't see many actual hypnotists doing it just for the love of doing it. The problem with most anyone who would even attempt this, is after the holy grail of 10 seconds and Mindpunisher mentions, then what? Once people are amazed for 10 seconds they then would then expect more, bigger and better. if all this did occur, this is where most would fail miserably.
I said earlier, I don't know anyone who does impromptu or street hypnosis, and I also don't know anyone that like magicians perform just for the love of hypnosis. This is a wanna-be mentality, not very real world. |

I do a bit of street hypnosis simply out of the love of it. As Chris mentions, most people seem quite interested in even minor phenomena. This is in the US however, where there isn't much exposure to hypnosis. People are impressed even by catatonia.
To answer OP's question, some stage hypnosis acts can actually be tweaked into an impromptu setting. I've taken some from Jacquin, but to be specific I do some tricks like making them think they're my Italian/Korean/Etc. interpreter, making them think some random object I give them is marijuana (if I can confirm beforehand they're not asthmatic or would have any physical problem), making them think some famous actor is in the crowd and the subject will just HAVE to get an autograph. I've had them think their nose was missing, that they were a time traveler from the far future, that all their friends (if they were with a group) had their gender swapped, that the love of their life is in front of them when they open their eyes, that I'm invisible, or show them a card trick after telling them the card I pick will always be their card. You can also get some good ideas by simply watching stage or street hypnotists online, and thinking about how you could tweak their acts to suit you. Best of luck! |

Here's a bit of a twist on the usual Street Hypnosis skits.
I'm currently part of an art installation in Christchurch, New Zealand. I hypnotise a plant expert/scientist and have them communicate with a plant/tree, answering questions (devised by the artist) on the plant's behalf. It's happening in the earthquake ravaged City Centre and we've had both laughter and tears with some very poignant, moving moments. It's happening over six weekends with a different outdoor location, different plant and different expert each time. http://scapebiennial.org.nz/can-anybody-hear-me |

I've recently been experimenting with some pseudo-mentalism hypnosis effects that have been drawing a fantastic response from the (gathering) street crowd.
It's almost a dual-reality type of act. I'll hypnotize a subject, tell them that "in a moment I'm going to ask them to think of any card (or 5 digit number, or city...etc...), they will change their mind a few times but finally settle on the 5 of clubs" I also suggest uncontrollable excitement when I reveal their chosen card. I then induce amnesia about being hypnotized and about the suggested card. When I "wake" them (not really, but it appears so), I do a lot of buildup with the subject as well as the audience, who of course is in on the secret. Of course, the end result is a spectator who is completely blown away by the fact that they've never been hypnotized or influenced in any way and I just READ THEIR MIND! The audience is blown away by the "power of the mind" and the excitement of the spectator and their involvement in the act. If played right, it's incredibly fun! -Chris. |
