I did a show yesterday for 4-6 year old girls' summer camp. My show lasts about 40 minutes, and it was clear that they wanted to see more. They said so. One of them said, "do everything again." And I felt bad leaving them. So I did a few more unplanned tricks. The show lasted about 50-55 minutes.
But of course, the girls weren't paying for the show, the camp director was. And camp directors have schedules. So given that the camp director was told that my show lasts 40 minutes, it wasn't clear that I did the right thing. (The camp director didn't complain though. She was just surprised I think.) What is the best way to handle a situation like this? |

If there is no time pressure, have one killer routine in reserve and do it. If there is a time schedule, explain, make your apologies, and leave on time.

Take pride in your work, and the camp director will get over being treated to a special performance at no additional charge.

Also, if you don't fully know at that moment how critical the schedule is, you can always look directly at the client and ask them, "How are we doing on time?" I have done that with answers that have actually gone both ways. At that point you follow Tony's advice above.

I have three endings planned in every show. This way I can end or continue the show at MY discretion. 'MY' is in capital letters. It depends on many factors. If the audience is not giving me the respect and energy I want they get one ending. They never know what they are missing because each ending seems like a logical place to stop the show.
I've had a few times where I have been asked to do more (after I have done all three endings) and have told them to bring me back next year and I'll do a completely different show for them. You run the risk of overstaying your welcome, especially if you start doing secondary routines after they've seen you best stuff. Somebody famous once said, "Always leave them wanting more!"

Sometimes it has nothing to do with how well the reaction is going. If the timing of your show may negatively affect other scheduled events then you must hit the mark. Not speaking of anyone here, because I've not seen any of you work, but some magicians think they own the room once they take the microphone. Try doing "one more trick" when the kids have to be back in class, or off to another event, or loading on a bus/making carpool, or when another group has yet to see the show, or when lunch is served, etc. The only person that trick will fool will be the magician.
Of course it is always good to give the client more when you can, and when it's appropriate, so I'm not saying anyone did anything wrong here, On the contrary, it sounds like the camp director may have been surprised that someone gave them more than their money's worth. Maybe she's not used to that happening. At least we should all hope that was it.

I personally have a planned structure to my show where doing extra tricks after the show would take away from the overall experience.

When the show's over, it's over. I say, 'don't worry, If your teachers invite me back, I will be back or maybe I'll see you at your bday party. You never want a good movie to end, you want more. They want more, and they will get it-Next time

I think, it's better to stop while the people still want to see something more then to continue untill they've seen "enough"
they will talk about your magic longer if they haven't been completely staisfied with magic and as a bonus they might book you again if they feel they haven't seen "all" you can do. and also important, if you start improvising and do effect that you haven't planned/prepared its easier to mess up and ruin the good impression that you have made with your well practised routine |

What if their show usually runs an hour but the ponies are late and they just want to give an encore as the ponies are being unloaded because - to the guests it's an encore but to the performer... it's less time then they usually do.
